US passport holders can enter Tajikistan without a visa for stays up to 30 days. This policy is valid through at least 2026. Your passport must be valid for six months from your arrival date, and you need a return or onward ticket.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Tajikistan. No 6-month validity rule applies for US passport holders — just cover your stay dates. Airlines at check-in may still ask to see your return ticket and passport validity, so have both ready.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Tajikistan
Immigration at Dushanbe airport routinely asks for a return or onward ticket before they stamp you in. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight booking. If you're overlanding out, a bus or train reservation works too.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked hotel. A printed booking confirmation or a letter from a host with their address and phone number covers this. I've been asked for it once in Dushanbe — better to have it.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officials can request proof you have enough money for your stay. A credit card or a bank statement showing a few hundred dollars is usually fine. I've never been asked, but I've seen travelers pulled aside for not having any cash or card on them.Recommended
Registration after 10 days
If you stay more than 10 days, you must register with the authorities. Hotels handle this automatically. If staying with friends or family, you or your host must go to the local OVIR office. Fines for missing registration can be steep — up to $400.
Keep your migration card
When you enter, you'll get a small migration card. The departure portion must be handed back when you leave. Lose it and you'll face delays and a fine at the airport.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Dushanbe International Airport (or land border)
Most US travelers fly into Dushanbe (DYU). At passport control, join the 'Foreigners' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will stamp you in for up to 30 days. No visa needed, no fee.
2
Complete the migration card (if requested)
You may be handed a small white card to fill out. It asks for basic info: name, passport number, flight number, address in Tajikistan. Keep the departure portion with your passport — you'll hand it back when you leave.
3
Collect your luggage and exit customs
After passport control, grab your bags from the carousel. Customs is usually a green channel for most travelers. If you have nothing to declare, just walk through.
