Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Hungary. Hungary does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but your airline might enforce it — check with them before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Budapest Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this at passport control.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation email or a signed invitation letter from your host works. Keep it accessible on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
You might be asked to show you have enough money for your stay. A bank statement or credit card with a reasonable limit (around €100 per day of stay) usually satisfies the officer.Recommended
Schengen 90/180 rule applies
Your 90-day visa-free stay is shared across all 27 Schengen countries. If you've already spent 60 days in France, you only have 30 days left for Hungary. Track your days carefully — overstaying can lead to fines and a ban.
Travel insurance is cheap, medical bills are not
Hungary's public healthcare is not free for visitors. A simple emergency room visit can cost €200–€500. A hospital stay can run into thousands. Travel insurance costs as little as €10–€20 for a week. Don't skip it.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Budapest Airport (or other Schengen entry point)
You'll land at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) or another Schengen airport. Follow signs to 'Non-EU Passports' or 'All Passports'. Queue times vary — expect 15–45 minutes during peak hours.
2
Present your passport and supporting documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket, accommodation proof, and purpose of visit. Answer clearly and briefly. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date.
3
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. Customs is usually green channel for most travellers. If you have nothing to declare, walk straight through.
4
Exit the airport and start your trip
Once through customs, you're free to leave. Taxis, buses, and trains are available outside. Keep your passport and entry stamp safe — you'll need it for your departure.

Frequently asked questions

No, the 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended for tourism or business. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a long-stay visa (e.g., work, study, family reunification) at a Hungarian consulate before travelling. Overstaying can result in fines, a ban, or deportation.
No, Brazil passport holders do not need to register with local authorities for stays under 90 days. Your entry stamp is sufficient. If you stay with a private host, they may need to notify the local district office, but that's their responsibility.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may face a fine (typically €50–€300), a ban from the Schengen Area for up to 5 years, and deportation. Always track your days carefully — use a travel app or calendar.
No. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. If it expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. Renew your passport before travelling.
No, if you're transiting through a Hungarian airport and staying airside (not passing through immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport or stay overnight, you'll need to meet the visa-free entry requirements.
If denied, you'll be given a written decision explaining the reason. Common reasons include insufficient funds, lack of return ticket, or passport validity issues. You can appeal, but it's rarely successful on the spot. Best to ensure all documents are in order before travel.
No, the visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, and short visits only. Working remotely for a foreign employer is technically not allowed without a work permit. However, enforcement is rare for short stays. If you plan to work, consider Hungary's digital nomad visa (White Card) for longer stays.
