Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Swiss passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Paraguay. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Paraguayan law, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of exit from Paraguay
Immigration officers at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — a bus ticket to Argentina or Brazil also works if you're leaving overland.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Paraguayan border officials sometimes ask where you're staying. A printed hotel confirmation or a letter from a host with their address and phone number covers this. Not always checked, but saves time if asked.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers may request evidence of sufficient funds for your stay. A bank statement showing a few hundred USD, a credit card, or cash in USD/PYG works. No fixed minimum amount is published, but having around $50 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
6-month passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires within 6 months of your entry date, you may be denied boarding. Renew your passport well in advance.
Keep a copy of your return ticket
Immigration officers at Asunción airport often ask to see your return or onward ticket. A screenshot on your phone is fine — just make sure it's easy to find.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU) in Asunción
Most Swiss travellers fly into Asunción. After landing, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). There are usually two queues: one for Paraguayan nationals and one for foreigners. Join the foreigners queue.
2
Present your passport and supporting documents
Hand over your passport (valid 6+ months) and be ready to show your return ticket and accommodation booking if asked. The officer will check your details, stamp your passport, and let you through. The process usually takes 2–5 minutes.
3
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, head to baggage claim. Then go through customs — there's a red/green channel system. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Random checks happen.
4
Exit the airport
Once through customs, you're free to leave. Taxis and ride-shares (like Uber) are available outside. Have your accommodation address ready for the driver.

Frequently asked questions

No, Paraguay does not require a yellow fever vaccine for Swiss passport holders. However, if you've recently been in a country with yellow fever (e.g., Brazil, Bolivia), you may be asked for proof of vaccination. Check with your doctor before travel.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at immigration. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before you travel.
Technically, the visa-free entry is for tourism and business (meetings, conferences). Remote work for a foreign employer is a grey area. If you're planning to work for a Paraguayan company, you need a work visa. For short-term remote work, most travellers do it without issues, but it's not officially allowed.
No, Swiss citizens don't need any visa — it's visa-free. There is no eVisa system for Paraguay for Swiss passport holders.
The local currency is the Paraguayan guaraní (PYG). US dollars are widely accepted in hotels and larger shops, but you'll get better rates using local currency. ATMs are available in Asunción and other cities. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants.
No, Paraguay does not require an arrival declaration for Swiss passport holders. You just go through immigration with your passport and supporting documents.
