Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your Swiss passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Tajikistan. Airlines at Zurich and Geneva check this before boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound travel proof
Immigration at Dushanbe International Airport routinely asks for proof of onward travel within 30 days. Have your return or next-destination ticket ready on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Booking.com or Airbnb confirmations work fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for stay
Officers can request proof you have enough cash or card funds for your trip. $50–100 USD per day is a safe benchmark. ATMs in Dushanbe dispense Somoni but carry some USD as backup.Recommended
Visa-free only for 30 days
Swiss passport holders get 30 days visa-free. This cannot be extended. If you plan to stay longer, you must apply for a visa at a Tajik embassy before departure.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Tajikistan requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. If it's even a day short, you'll be denied boarding or entry. Check your passport now.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Dushanbe International Airport
Most Swiss travelers fly into Dushanbe (DYU). After landing, follow signs to 'Passport Control'. There are separate queues for Tajik citizens and foreigners. Use the foreigner queue.
2
Present your passport and boarding pass
Hand over your passport and boarding pass. The officer will check your passport validity and may ask about your trip purpose and length of stay. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the entry date and the allowed stay (30 days). Check the stamp before leaving the counter. If the date is wrong, ask for correction immediately.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, collect your bags from the carousel. There's a customs declaration if you're carrying large sums of cash or goods. Otherwise, walk through the green channel.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a visa before traveling or leave and re-enter. Overstaying can result in fines and problems at immigration.
For stays under 30 days, no registration is required. If you stay longer (with a visa), you must register with the Ministry of Internal Affairs within 3 business days. Since Swiss passport holders get 30 days visa-free, this doesn't apply to most travelers.
You'll be denied entry. Tajikistan strictly enforces the 6-month validity rule. Renew your passport before traveling.
Yes, the visa-free policy applies at all land borders, including from Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Afghanistan. The same 30-day limit and passport validity rules apply. Be prepared for longer processing times at land crossings.
No, it's not mandatory for entry. However, medical facilities in Tajikistan are basic and evacuation to a better-equipped country (e.g., Turkey or Germany) can cost thousands. Most travel insurance policies cost under $50 for a short trip.
The local currency is the Tajikistani somoni (TJS). US dollars are widely accepted for exchange and some hotels. Bring crisp, new $100 bills for the best exchange rates. ATMs are available in Dushanbe but may not always work with foreign cards.
No mandatory vaccinations for entry. However, the CDC and WHO recommend routine vaccines plus hepatitis A, typhoid, and rabies for most travelers. Check with your doctor 4-6 weeks before travel.
