Starting in 2026, Ivory Coast passport holders must get a visa before traveling to Canada. You need to apply for a visitor visa (TRV) — there is no visa-free access or eTA option for CI passports.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Visitor visa (TRV) required
Apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) at the Canadian visa office in Abidjan or online via the IRCC portal. Processing takes 2–4 weeks on average. You'll need to submit biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at a Visa Application Centre — book an appointment as soon as you submit the application.Apply for TRVRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Canada. Canada does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may enforce it — check with your carrier before booking.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Canada
Immigration officers at Canadian airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave Canada before your visa expires. Have a printed or digital copy ready — airlines also check this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a letter from your host in Canada with their address and contact details. Border officers may ask where you're staying — having a printed copy speeds things up.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or a credit card statement showing at least CAD $2,500 for a short trip, or more if staying longer. Officers at Canadian airports occasionally ask to see proof you can cover your expenses.Recommended
Visa required for transit too
Even if you're just changing planes in Canada (e.g., flying from Abidjan to the US via Toronto), you need a visa. There is no transit visa exemption for Ivory Coast passport holders.
Biometrics are valid for 10 years
Once you give biometrics for a Canadian visa, they're stored for 10 years. If you apply again within that period, you won't need to re-submit them.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a visitor visa online
Go to the official Canada visa website and create an account. Fill out the application form, upload your documents (passport scan, photo, bank statements, travel itinerary), and pay the CAD 100 fee. Processing takes 2–4 weeks on average.
2
Submit biometrics
After applying, you'll get a letter asking for biometrics (fingerprints and photo). Book an appointment at the nearest Visa Application Centre (VAC) — in Abidjan, the VAC is at the Canadian Embassy. Walk-ins are not accepted.
3
Wait for visa decision
Once biometrics are submitted, your application is processed. You'll receive an email when a decision is made. If approved, the visa sticker will be placed in your passport.
4
Arrive at a Canadian airport
At the airport, go to the 'Visitors' queue. Hand over your passport with the visa sticker. The border officer may ask about your trip purpose, accommodation, and return ticket. Answer honestly. They'll stamp your passport with a stay duration (usually up to 6 months).
