What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Gather all required documents: passport with 6+ months validity, completed visa application form, 2 recent passport photos, return flight booking, accommodation proof, travel insurance, bank statements, and visa fee. Make photocopies of everything.
2
Book an appointment at the Finnish embassy or VFS center
In Abidjan, the Finnish embassy handles visa applications through VFS Global. Go to the VFS website, select Finland, and book a slot. Appointments can fill up 2–3 weeks in advance, so plan ahead.
3
Attend the in-person appointment
Show up at the VFS center at your scheduled time with all original documents and photocopies. You'll submit your application, provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo), and pay the fee. The whole process takes about 30 minutes.
4
Wait for visa processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days, but can extend to 30–45 days during peak season (May–September). You'll get a notification when your passport is ready for collection or courier delivery.
5
Travel to Finland and pass through border control
At Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, join the 'All passports' queue. Hand over your passport with the visa sticker. The officer may ask about your trip purpose, accommodation, and return ticket. Answer clearly and calmly. They'll stamp your passport with your entry date.

Frequently asked questions

No. There is no visa-on-arrival for Ivory Coast passport holders at any Finnish port of entry. You must obtain a Schengen visa from the Finnish embassy or a VFS center in Abidjan before you travel.
Standard processing is 15 calendar days from the date of your appointment. However, during peak travel seasons (May to September), it can take 30–45 days. Apply at least 4–6 weeks before your planned departure.
The Schengen visa fee is €80 for adults (about 52,000 CFA francs), €40 for children aged 6–12, and free for children under 6. This fee is non-refundable even if your visa is denied. You pay at the VFS center in Abidjan.
You'll receive a formal rejection letter stating the reason. Common reasons include insufficient funds, unclear travel purpose, or incomplete documents. You can appeal the decision within 30 days to the Finnish embassy, or reapply with stronger documentation.
No. A single Schengen visa issued by Finland allows you to travel to all 27 Schengen countries (including France, Germany, Italy, etc.) for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Just enter Finland first if it's your main destination.
Generally no for a short-stay Schengen visa. Extensions are only granted in exceptional cases (e.g., medical emergency, force majeure). For longer stays, you need a national visa or residence permit, which you must apply for before your 90 days expire.
Your passport with the valid visa sticker, your return or onward flight ticket (printed or on your phone), proof of accommodation for your entire stay, and sometimes proof of sufficient funds. The officer may also ask about your travel plans — answer honestly and briefly.
