Even with a visa-free entry, border officers can refuse entry if they suspect you don't meet the conditions (e.g., insufficient funds, unclear purpose of visit, or previous overstays). Always carry supporting documents.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before travel
Ensure your passport is valid for 6+ months from entry. Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Print or save digital copies of all confirmations.
2
Arrive at an Austrian airport or land border
You'll enter through a Schengen external border. At Vienna Airport (VIE), Salzburg (SZG), or Innsbruck (INN), join the 'Non-EU' queue. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready.
3
Present your passport to the border officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask the purpose of your visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. Check the stamp is legible. This stamp starts your 90-day visa-free period.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked bags), then go through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're now in Austria.
