What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Indonesian Airport
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. Major airports like Ngurah Rai (Bali), Soekarno-Hatta (Jakarta), and Kuala Namu (Medan) have dedicated VoA counters.
2
Pay the VoA Fee
Hand over your passport and pay 500,000 IDR. You'll get a receipt and a visa sticker placed in your passport. Keep the receipt — you'll need it for extension.
3
Proceed to Immigration
Join the 'Foreign Passport' queue. Present your passport (with the VoA sticker), boarding pass, and return ticket if asked. The officer will stamp you in for 30 days.
4
Collect Baggage and Exit
After immigration, collect your luggage and go through customs. You may be asked to fill an electronic customs declaration (online form available at customs counter).

Frequently asked questions

Yes, you can extend it once for another 30 days. Cost is about 500,000 IDR plus a processing fee. Go to any Kantor Imigrasi (immigration office) before your first 30 days expire. The extension takes 3–5 working days.
Overstaying costs 1,000,000 IDR per day (about $65 USD). Pay at the airport immigration office before departure. Serious overstays can lead to deportation and a ban.
VoA is available at most international airports and some seaports (e.g., Batam, Bintan). For land borders (e.g., from Malaysia or Timor-Leste), you need to apply for a visa in advance. Check with the nearest Indonesian embassy.
If you stay airside and don't pass immigration, no visa is needed. If you need to enter the country (e.g., to switch airports or stay overnight), you'll need a VoA or pre-arranged visa.
You will be denied boarding by the airline and entry by immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. No exceptions.
No. VoA is for tourism, transit, business meetings, or short social visits. Working (paid or unpaid) requires a work permit and appropriate visa. Violating this can get you deported and banned.
Cash in Indonesian Rupiah is simplest. Major airports also accept credit/debit cards. Avoid USD if possible — exchange rates are poor. Have 500,000 IDR ready.
