What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), save a screenshot of your return ticket, and have your first night's accommodation address handy. No visa application or pre-approval needed.
2
Arrive at a Peruvian airport or land border
At Lima's Jorge Chávez Airport, follow signs to 'Migraciones' (Immigration). Queues can be 20–60 minutes. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. Land borders like Tacna or Desaguadero have similar procedures.
3
Present your passport to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer will check your validity, may ask your purpose of visit and how long you're staying. Answer briefly and honestly. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date and allowed stay (usually 180 days).
4
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. Customs is usually a green/red channel system. If you have nothing to declare, go through the green channel. Random checks happen.

Frequently asked questions

No. Chilean passport holders can enter Peru visa-free for up to 180 days per visit. This applies to tourism, business, and short-term stays.
You can stay up to 180 days per entry. The exact number of days is stamped on your passport upon arrival. Overstaying can result in fines (around 1–2 USD per day over) and possible entry bans.
Extensions are not available for visa-free entries. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to leave Peru (e.g., to Chile, Ecuador, or Colombia) and re-enter. Immigration may grant another 180 days at their discretion, but it's not guaranteed.
You must have a valid passport for the entire duration of your stay. If it expires, you'll need to contact your embassy (Chilean Embassy in Lima) for an emergency travel document. Overstaying with an expired passport can lead to fines and complications.
Yes, you need proof of onward travel out of Peru. A bus ticket to Chile, Ecuador, or Colombia works. A screenshot or printed copy is fine.
No, it's not mandatory for entry. But it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Peru can be high — a hospital visit for a broken leg can easily cost $500+. Insurance covers that.
Denial is rare for Chileans with valid passports. If it happens, ask the officer for a written reason. You'll be returned to your point of origin (usually on the next flight or bus). Contact the Chilean Embassy in Lima for assistance.
