Immigration officers at IKIA routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a digital version ready on your phone.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking
Have a printed hotel confirmation for your entire stay. If you are staying with friends or family, get a notarized invitation letter from them — immigration asks for this regularly.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient funds
Carry at least €500 in cash or have a bank statement showing access to funds. Credit cards issued outside Iran do not work inside the country — bring euros or US dollars.Recommended
Cash only for visa fee
The visa-on-arrival fee must be paid in cash — euros or US dollars are preferred. No credit cards, no ATMs. Bring enough cash to cover the fee (around €100) plus extra for expenses.

All women, including foreign tourists, must wear a headscarf (hijab) in public in Iran. Have one ready in your carry-on — you'll need it before you leave the airport.

What happens at the border

1
Land at an international airport
Visa on arrival is available at Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA) in Tehran, as well as airports in Shiraz, Isfahan, Mashhad, and Tabriz. You cannot get it at land borders.
2
Go to the visa-on-arrival counter
After passport control, look for the 'Visa on Arrival' desk. Fill out the application form (available in English and Farsi). Have your passport, return ticket, and hotel booking ready.
3
Pay the visa fee
The fee is around €75–€100 (or equivalent in euros, dollars, or Iranian rials). Pay in cash — credit cards are not accepted. Keep the receipt.
4
Get your visa sticker and enter
Once approved, the officer will stamp the visa sticker into your passport. You'll then proceed to passport control for entry. The whole process takes 20–40 minutes.
