Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Schengen visa application
Apply before travel
Apply for a Schengen visa at the Hungarian consulate or visa application centre in your country of residence. Submit your application at least 15 days before your planned departure — processing usually takes 10–15 calendar days. Use the official portal to book an appointment and upload your documents.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Hungary and the Schengen area. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Schengen rules, but some airlines may ask for 6 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen
Immigration officers at Budapest Airport may ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen area within your visa's validity. Have a printed or digital copy ready — budget airlines often check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a confirmed hotel reservation for each night of your stay, or a notarised invitation letter from a host in Hungary. Immigration may ask to see it at the border — a printed booking confirmation works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Be ready to show you have enough money for your stay — around €100 per day is a common benchmark. A recent bank statement, credit card, or cash in euros will satisfy most officers.Recommended
Apply early — slots fill up fast
Appointment slots at Hungarian embassies in China can be booked weeks in advance, especially during summer and holiday seasons. Start your application process at least 2 months before your planned departure.
Visa-free transit at Budapest Airport
If you are transiting through Budapest Airport to a non-Schengen country and staying airside, you do not need a visa. But if you need to leave the airport or switch terminals, you must have a valid Schengen visa.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Gather all required documents: passport, photos, flight and hotel bookings, travel insurance, bank statements, and the completed visa application form. Make copies of everything.
2
Submit your visa application
Book an appointment at the Hungarian embassy or consulate in Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou (depending on your region). Submit your documents in person and pay the visa fee (€80 for adults, €40 for children 6–12, free for under 6).
3
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days. It can extend to 30–45 days if additional checks are needed. Do not book non-refundable flights until you have the visa.
4
Collect your passport
Once approved, collect your passport with the visa sticker. Check that the visa dates and number of entries match your travel plans.
5
Arrive in Hungary
At Budapest Airport or any other entry point, present your passport with the valid visa. The border officer may ask for your return ticket, accommodation proof, and travel insurance. Answer clearly and honestly.
