Must cover your stay
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — just enough to cover your stay. Airlines may still enforce a 6-month rule, so check with your carrier before flying.Required

Immigration officers sometimes ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready. Enforcement varies by officer and airport.Recommended
Proof of accommodation

Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host. Immigration may ask for it, especially if you're staying at a private residence.Recommended

Have a bank statement or credit card available. Immigration rarely asks for it, but having proof of at least ¥100,000 (or equivalent) avoids delays.Recommended

What happens at the border

1
Apply for eVisa Online
Go to the official Japanese eVisa website, fill in your personal and travel details, upload a digital passport photo (45mm x 35mm, white background), and pay the visa fee (¥3,000). Processing usually takes 3–5 business days. You'll receive an approval email with a PDF.
2
Prepare Your Documents
Print or save digital copies of your eVisa approval, return flight ticket, and first-night hotel booking. Keep your passport handy. If you registered on Visit Japan Web, have the QR code ready.
3
Arrive at Japanese Immigration
At the airport (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, etc.), follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' or 'Arrivals'. Hand over your passport and eVisa approval. The officer may ask for your return ticket or hotel address. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport and you're in.
4
Clear Customs and Collect Luggage
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. If you used Visit Japan Web, scan your QR code at the customs kiosk. Otherwise, fill out a paper customs declaration. Then exit into the arrivals hall.
