Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Thailand
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity remaining from the day you leave Thailand. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Thailand within 60 days
Immigration officers at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports check for a return or onward ticket leaving Thailand within 60 days. Budget airlines are especially strict — have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host address for your stay
Immigration may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family
You need to show at least 20,000 THB in cash, traveler's cheques, or a bank statement. Immigration rarely asks, but if they do and you can't show it, you risk denial of entry.Recommended
Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)TDAC
Optional online pre-registration to speed up immigration
Register at tdac.immigration.go.th before your flight — it takes 2 minutes and gives you a QR code for a faster lane at immigration. Not mandatory, but saves time in the queue.Register on TDACOptional
Overstaying is expensive
Overstay fine is 500 THB per day (capped at 20,000 THB). If you overstay more than 90 days, you get a 1-year ban; over 1 year, a 3-year ban. Set a reminder to leave on time.
TDAC saves time
Filling out the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (tdac.immigration.go.th) before you fly can cut your immigration queue time by 15–30 minutes at busy airports like Suvarnabhumi. It's free and takes 5 minutes.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months), print or screenshot your return ticket, and save your hotel booking confirmation. Optionally complete the TDAC form online.
2
At the airport in China (check-in)
The airline check-in agent will verify your passport validity and onward ticket. If you don't have a return ticket, you may be denied boarding. Show them your booking confirmation if asked.
3
Arrival at a Thai airport (immigration)
At Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Don Mueang (DMK), Phuket, or Chiang Mai, follow signs to 'Foreign Passport' or 'Visa on Arrival' (even though you're visa-free). Join the queue, present your passport, and the officer will stamp you in for up to 60 days. If you completed TDAC, you'll use a faster lane.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After the stamp, collect your bags from the carousel and walk through customs. There's usually nothing to declare unless you're carrying restricted items.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry for Chinese passport holders is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must leave Thailand and re-enter, or apply for a proper visa (e.g., tourist visa) before travel. Overstaying costs 500 THB per day and can get you banned.
Officially, you should be able to show at least 20,000 THB (or equivalent) per person or 40,000 THB per family. In practice, this is almost never checked for Chinese tourists arriving visa-free. Still, having a credit card or cash is wise.
The airline will likely deny you boarding. Even if you get through, immigration may ask for proof of onward travel. A cheap bus or flight to a neighboring country (like Laos or Cambodia) works as an onward ticket.
Yes, there's no official limit. But if you spend more than 180 days in Thailand in a calendar year, immigration may question your intentions. For back-to-back entries, have a clear reason (e.g., tourism, visiting family).
TDAC (Thailand Digital Arrival Card) is a free online form at tdac.immigration.go.th. It's optional — you can fill it out up to 72 hours before arrival. If you do, you'll use a faster lane at immigration. If you skip it, you just queue in the regular line. No penalty either way.
No. Visa-free entry is strictly for tourism, short business meetings, or visiting family. You cannot work (including remote work for a foreign company) or study. For work, you need a Non-B visa and work permit. For study, a Non-ED visa.
You will be denied boarding by the airline. Even if you somehow get to Thailand, immigration will refuse entry. Renew your passport before traveling.
