Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before departure
Apply online at evisa.gov.kh. The eVisa costs $30 USD and is valid for a single entry up to 30 days. Processing takes 3 working days — do not wait until the last minute.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Cambodia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a flight out of Cambodia. Have a printed or digital copy of your onward ticket ready. If you overstay, the fine is $10 USD per day, paid at the airport.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host. Immigration rarely asks, but if they do and you have nothing, they may delay you for questioning.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Have at least $500 USD in cash or a bank statement showing sufficient funds. Immigration does not always check, but budget airlines sometimes ask at check-in.Recommended
Cash only at visa counter
The visa-on-arrival counter does not accept credit cards or mobile payments. Bring USD 30–35 in crisp, clean bills. ATMs are available after immigration, but you'll need cash before that point.
E-visa option available
If you prefer to skip the visa-on-arrival queue, apply online at evisa.gov.kh at least 3 business days before travel. The e-visa costs USD 36 and is accepted at major airports and some land borders.

What happens at the border

1
Fill out the arrival card and visa application form
You'll get two forms on the plane or at the airport: an immigration arrival card and a visa application form. Fill them out in English. Have your passport number, flight number, and hotel address ready.
2
Queue at the 'Visa on Arrival' counter
At Phnom Penh (PNH) and Siem Reap (REP) airports, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival'. Hand over your passport, the completed form, one passport photo, and USD 30. The officer will process it in 5–10 minutes.
3
Pay and collect your visa
Once processed, you'll get your passport back with the visa sticker inside. Check that your name, passport number, and validity dates are correct before leaving the counter.
4
Proceed to immigration
Join the immigration queue. Present your passport (with the visa), the arrival card, and your boarding pass. The officer may ask about your stay — answer briefly. You'll get an entry stamp.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel and head to customs. Green channel if you have nothing to declare. You're in.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Major land crossings like Poipet (from Thailand), Bavet (from Vietnam), and Cham Yeam (from Laos) all have visa-on-arrival counters. The process is the same as at airports — same fee, same requirements. Expect slightly longer queues at busy borders.
USD 30 for a tourist visa (single entry, valid for 30 days). A business visa costs USD 35. Pay in crisp USD bills — no coins, no torn notes. Cambodian Riel is accepted but at a poor exchange rate.
Yes, you can extend a tourist visa once for an additional 30 days. Go to the Immigration Department in Phnom Penh or use a visa agent (common and reliable). The extension costs around USD 45–50 and takes a few days. Overstaying costs USD 10 per day.
Most airports have photo booths near the visa counter. They charge around USD 5–10 for a set of four photos. It's cheaper to bring your own.
Immigration officers sometimes ask for proof of onward travel. It's not always checked, but having a screenshot of your return or onward flight on your phone is smart. If you don't have one, you might be asked to buy a ticket on the spot.
Yes. Cambodia offers an e-visa at evisa.gov.kh. It costs USD 36 + processing fee, takes 3 business days, and is valid for 30 days. You enter through Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, or Sihanoukville airports, plus a few land borders. The e-visa saves you queueing at the visa counter.
Overstay is fined at USD 10 per day, payable at the airport immigration office before departure. You'll need to pay in cash (USD). Overstays over 30 days may require a visit to the Immigration Department in Phnom Penh.
