Colombian passport holders can enter Spain without a visa for tourism or business stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This visa-free access covers the entire Schengen Area, so your 90-day allowance includes Spain and all other Schengen countries. As of 2026, entry requirements are straightforward, but you must meet a few conditions at the border.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Colombian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Spain. Spain doesn't enforce a 6-month validity rule for visa-free stays, but your airline might check it at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona will ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines often check this before boarding too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a signed letter from a friend/family member stating you're staying with them. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, you need a printed or digital copy.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry bank statements, a credit card, or cash showing you have at least €100 per day of your stay. I've seen officers ask for this at passport control when they suspect someone might work illegally.Recommended
90-day limit applies to all Schengen countries
Your 90-day visa-free stay is shared across all 27 Schengen countries. If you spend 30 days in France, 30 in Italy, and 30 in Spain, you've used your full allowance. Track your days carefully — overstaying can result in fines and a re-entry ban.
ETIAS coming soon
Starting in 2026, Colombian passport holders will need to register online with ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) before traveling to Spain. It's a quick, €7 application valid for 3 years. Keep an eye on official EU sources for the exact launch date.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Spanish border control
At any Spanish airport (Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, etc.), join the 'Non-EU' queue. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will stamp your passport with your entry date.
2
Answer the officer's questions
You'll likely be asked: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and when you're leaving. Answer clearly and briefly. If you have travel insurance or proof of funds, offer them only if asked.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. Check the stamp is legible before walking away. This stamp starts your 90-day clock.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After border control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. Green channel if you have nothing to declare, red if you do. Then you're free to enter Spain.

Frequently asked questions

No, the 90-day visa-free limit applies to the entire Schengen Area and cannot be extended for tourism. If you want to stay longer, you need to apply for a national visa (e.g., student, work, or long-stay) from the Spanish consulate in Colombia before you travel.
No, Colombian passport holders do not need a transit visa for Spain. You can stay in the international transit zone of any Spanish airport without a visa, as long as you have a confirmed onward ticket and your destination's entry requirements are met.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may face a fine (typically €500–€1,000), a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 3 years, and deportation. Always track your days carefully.
Technically, the tourist visa does not permit any work, including remote work for a foreign employer. However, enforcement is rare for short stays. If you plan to work remotely, consider Spain's digital nomad visa (for stays over 90 days) or keep your activities low-key.
If you stay longer than 90 days, you must register with the local police (Oficina de Extranjería) within 30 days of arrival. For stays under 90 days, no registration is required.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. Renew your passport before traveling. If you have a damaged passport (e.g., torn page, water damage), get a replacement first.
No, the 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. If it expires sooner, renew it before you travel.
