Burkina Faso customs rules & duty-free allowances
Burkina Faso's customs enforcement is notably strict on cash declarations and counterfeit goods. The cash declaration threshold is 1,000,000 XOF (about $1,700 USD), far lower than the global norm, and penalties for non-compliance are severe. Counterfeit items of any kind are seized with potential fines or prosecution.
Duty-free allowances

- Firearms, ammunition, and explosives without a permit
- Pornographic materials (including digital media)
- Endangered species and products (e.g., ivory, rhino horn, certain animal skins) under CITES
- Radioactive materials and hazardous waste

- Plants, seeds, and live animals (require phytosanitary or veterinary certificates)

Arriving: red vs green channel
After collecting luggage, proceed to the customs hall. Use the green channel if you have nothing to declare or goods within the duty-free limit. Use the red channel if you have goods to declare, cash over 1,000,000 XOF, or restricted items; fill out a customs declaration form. Officers may conduct random bag inspections.
Bringing medication
Personal medications allowed for up to 3 months' supply with a doctor's prescription. Narcotics, psychotropics, and codeine-based painkillers are strictly controlled or banned; obtain prior authorization from the Ministry of Health.
Food, plants & animal products
All food, plants, seeds, and animal products must be declared. Fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy are generally prohibited without a phytosanitary certificate. Processed, sealed foods in small quantities for personal use are usually allowed.
Rules worth knowing
Cash declaration threshold is low
You must declare any cash or negotiable instruments over 1,000,000 XOF (about $1,700 USD). This is much lower than the global standard of $10,000. Failure to declare can result in confiscation and fines up to 50% of the amount.
No duty-free for alcohol or tobacco if under 18
The duty-free allowance for alcohol and tobacco applies only to travellers aged 18 and over. Minors cannot bring in any alcohol or tobacco duty-free.
Strict enforcement on counterfeit goods
Burkina Faso has a zero-tolerance policy on counterfeit goods. Even small quantities for personal use can be seized, and you may face fines or legal action.
