Malawi strictly enforces biosecurity and anti-corruption measures. All arriving non-resident adults in 2026 must declare cash over MWK 10,000,000 (approx. USD 10,000) and comply with a ban on single-use plastic bags. Permits are required for drones and satellite phones.

Arriving: red vs green channel

Upon arrival, proceed through the Green Channel if you have nothing to declare; otherwise use the Red Channel. You must complete a Customs Declaration Form (CDF) even if you have nothing to declare. Officers may conduct random searches.

Bringing medication

Personal medications for up to 3 months are allowed with a prescription. Narcotics, psychotropics, and codeine-containing medicines require prior approval from the Pharmacy, Medicines and Poisons Board.

Malawi does not operate a tourist VAT refund scheme. All purchases are final with no tax back at departure.
