Yemen customs rules & duty-free allowances
Yemen's customs are strict on cash and religious items. Declare anything over 10,000 USD or equivalent in YER. Alcohol is banned for import by non-Muslims only with a special permit, and pork products are prohibited entirely. These rules apply to all non-resident adult travellers arriving in 2026.
Duty-free allowances
Prohibited — banned from import
- Narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances (except with special permit)
- Pork and all pork products
- Alcoholic beverages for Muslims (non-Muslims require permit)
- Firearms, ammunition, and explosives (except with Ministry of Interior permit)
- Pornographic materials
- Counterfeit currency and goods
Restricted — allowed with a permit or declaration
- Medications containing controlled substances (require prior approval from Ministry of Health)
- Satellite phones and communication equipment (require permit from Ministry of Telecommunications)
- Drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (require permit from Ministry of Defense)
- Cultural artifacts and antiques (require export permit from the General Organization of Antiquities and Museums)
- Live animals and plants (require import permits and health certificates)
Arriving: red vs green channel
Upon arrival, proceed to the Customs Hall. If you have nothing to declare or goods within duty-free limits, use the green channel. If you have goods above the limit, cash to declare, or prohibited/restricted items, use the red channel. You must fill out a Customs Declaration Card (Form No. 1) even if using the green channel.
Bringing medication
Personal medications for up to 30 days supply are allowed with a doctor's prescription. Controlled substances (e.g., narcotics, psychotropics) require prior approval from the Ministry of Health. Some common Western medications like codeine, tramadol, and certain antidepressants are banned or strictly controlled. Carry original prescriptions and a letter from your doctor.
Food, plants & animal products
All food, plants, seeds, and animal products must be declared. Fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy are generally prohibited without a phytosanitary certificate. Pork and pork products are banned. Honey and spices are allowed in small quantities for personal use.
Rules worth knowing
Alcohol Import Permit Required
Non-Muslims must obtain a permit from the Ministry of Tourism to import alcohol. Without it, alcohol is treated as prohibited and will be confiscated. The permit is not issued at the airport; apply in advance.
Cash Declaration is Mandatory
Any amount over 10,000 USD (or equivalent in YER) must be declared on the Customs Declaration Card. Failure to declare can result in confiscation of the entire amount and a fine of up to 50% of the undeclared sum.
Pork Products Strictly Banned
Import of pork and any pork-derived products (including gelatin, sausages, and canned goods) is prohibited for all travellers, regardless of religion. Items will be seized and destroyed.
Religious Materials Scrutiny
Religious books, pamphlets, or materials that are deemed offensive to Islam or promote other religions may be confiscated. It is advisable to avoid bringing such items unless for personal use and inoffensive.
