Schengen area rules apply
Austria is part of the Schengen area. Your 90-day visa-free stay counts across all 27 Schengen countries. If you've already spent time in France or Germany earlier in the year, that time counts toward your 90-day limit.
Passport validity is strict
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Austria. If it expires sooner, you will be denied boarding by the airline. Renew your passport well before travel.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry). Print or save on your phone: return ticket, first night accommodation booking, and travel insurance certificate. No visa application is needed.
2
Arrive at the airport in Cyprus
At Larnaca or Paphos airport, check in with your airline. They may ask to see your return ticket and accommodation. You don't need to show anything else.
3
Land in Austria and go to passport control
At Vienna International Airport (VIE) or any other Austrian airport, join the 'Non-EU' queue. Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, how long you're staying, where you're staying, and your return flight date. Answer clearly and briefly.
4
Get your passport stamped
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp is your proof of legal entry. Keep it safe — you'll need it when leaving. If you're staying in a hotel, they may ask to see it.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, pick up your bags from the carousel and walk through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're now in Austria.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen rule. The 90 days count all days spent in any Schengen country (Austria, Germany, France, etc.) combined. Use the EU's short-stay calculator to track your days.
No. The visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, family visits, and short-term study. Working remotely for a foreign employer is generally allowed as long as you don't enter the Austrian job market. If you plan to work for an Austrian company, you need a work visa.
No. The visa-free stay cannot be extended beyond 90 days. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a residence permit before your 90 days expire. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and a ban from the Schengen area.
You must have a valid passport for the entire duration of your stay. If it expires, contact the Cypriot embassy in Vienna immediately. They can issue an emergency travel document. You may also need to leave Austria until you get a new passport.
No. Cyprus passport holders do not need a transit visa for Austria. You can change planes at Vienna Airport without passing through passport control, as long as you stay in the international transit area.
Always carry your passport (or a copy) and your return ticket. Police can ask for ID at any time. A digital copy on your phone is usually accepted, but a physical copy is safer. Keep your passport in a hotel safe when not needed.
Yes, but it's risky. Emergency passports are accepted for entry, but some airlines may refuse boarding. Check with your airline before travel. If you have a temporary passport, ensure it has at least 6 months validity from your entry date.
