Active conflict — commercial flights suspended
Iran is currently in an active military conflict with the US (escalated July 2026, strikes near Tehran and Semnan province). Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport has suspended all scheduled commercial flights, and aviation authorities (EASA) advise against operating in Iranian airspace at all. Do not plan travel to Iran right now — check your government's official travel advisory and live flight status before making any arrangements. The visa information on this page describes the standard peacetime policy and may not be practically usable at the moment.
Apply early — no exceptions
The eVisa process can be slow, and there's no visa-on-arrival for Danish citizens. Don't leave it to the last minute. Apply at least 3–4 weeks before your departure date.
Women travellers: dress code
Iran enforces a strict dress code for women, including headscarves and modest clothing. This applies from the moment you step off the plane. Pack accordingly to avoid issues at immigration and in public.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for e-Visa online (recommended)
Go to the official Iranian e-Visa website (evisa.mfa.ir) and fill out the application form. Upload your passport photo and pay the fee. Processing typically takes 5-7 working days. Once approved, you will receive a visa approval code, which you present at the airport on arrival.
2
Alternatively, get visa on arrival
If you choose visa on arrival, fly into one of the international airports that offer it (e.g., Tehran Imam Khomeini, Mashhad, Shiraz, Tabriz). At the airport, go to the visa-on-arrival counter, fill out the form, provide your photo, pay the fee in cash (USD or EUR), and wait for processing. This can take 30 minutes to a few hours depending on the queue.
3
Prepare your documents before departure
Make sure your passport has 6 months validity, you have a printed copy of your e-Visa approval (if applicable), travel insurance, return ticket, and accommodation details. Keep them in your carry-on for easy access.
4
Go through immigration at the airport
Upon arrival, proceed to the immigration hall. Present your passport, visa (or approval code), and any requested documents. The officer will stamp your passport with a 30-day entry permit. After that, collect your luggage and exit.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, Danish passport holders can get a visa on arrival at major Iranian airports. However, it is not guaranteed — you must have a return ticket, travel insurance, and a hotel booking. The fee is around €50-€75 depending on nationality, payable in cash (USD or EUR). To avoid long queues and uncertainty, the e-Visa is recommended.
The official processing time is 5-7 working days, but it can take longer during peak seasons. Apply at least 2 weeks before your trip to be safe. You will receive an approval code via email, which you present at the airport to get your visa stamped.
The visa allows a maximum stay of 30 days. It is not extendable, so plan your itinerary accordingly. If you need to stay longer, you must leave the country and re-enter with a new visa.
Yes, you will need to upload a recent passport-style photo (3x4 cm, white background) during the online application. If you apply on arrival, you will need a physical photo to attach to the form.
Yes, travel insurance is required for the visa application and is often checked at immigration. Make sure your policy covers medical expenses and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance policies exclude Iran, so verify before buying.
No, the visa on arrival fee must be paid in cash, preferably in USD or EUR. Iranian banks are not connected to international banking systems, so credit/debit cards will not work. Bring enough cash to cover the fee and any immediate expenses.
You will be denied boarding by the airline and entry by Iranian immigration. Renew your passport before applying for the visa or booking flights. There are no exceptions to this rule.
