Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
ETA application
Electronic Travel Authorization
Apply for your ETA online at eta.gov.lk before departure. The ETA costs $35–$50 USD depending on processing speed and is valid for 30 days from arrival. Approval usually comes within 24 hours, but apply at least 2 days before your flight to be safe.Apply for ETARequired
Valid passport
Must cover your stay
Your Danish passport needs at least 6 months of validity beyond your intended departure date from Sri Lanka. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers at Bandaranaike International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot on your phone showing your flight out of Sri Lanka within the ETA validity period.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Sri Lanka. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least $50 USD per day of your stay. Immigration rarely checks this for Danish passport holders, but it is a formal requirement.Recommended
Cash is king at the visa counter
The visa-on-arrival counter at Colombo Airport prefers cash in USD or EUR. Cards are sometimes accepted but not reliable. Bring enough to cover the fee ($35–$50) plus a little extra.
eSIM saves time at the airport
Skip the SIM card queue at the airport by installing an Airalo eSIM before you land. It activates automatically and costs around $5–$10 for a week of data.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Colombo Airport
Land at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). Follow signs for 'Visa on Arrival' — don't join the regular immigration queue.
2
Fill out the arrival form
You'll receive a small arrival card on the plane or at the counter. Fill it in with your passport details, flight info, and accommodation address.
3
Pay the visa fee
At the visa counter, pay the fee in cash (USD or EUR preferred). As of 2026, it's around $35–$50 for a 30-day tourist visa. Credit cards are sometimes accepted but cash is safer.
4
Receive your visa sticker
The officer will stamp a visa sticker into your passport. Check the validity dates before you walk away.
5
Proceed to immigration
Show your passport with the new visa, the arrival card, and your return ticket if asked. You'll be waved through.
