Visa on arrival
Get your visa at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), or Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ). Pay $50 USD for a single-entry tourist visa (cash only, bring exact change). Have your return ticket and hotel booking printed out — the visa officer will ask to see both before issuing the sticker.Visa infoRequired
Valid passport
Passport validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Tanzania. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro airports routinely ask for a printed return or onward ticket. If you are overlanding to Kenya or Uganda, show a bus ticket or a flight out of the region.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a printed hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers at the visa-on-arrival counter often ask to see where you are staying for the first few nights.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient funds for stay
Carry at least $200 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing you can cover your trip. Immigration may ask how you plan to pay for your stay, especially if you have no hotel booking.Recommended
Cash only for visa fee
The visa-on-arrival fee must be paid in cash (USD or TZS). There are no ATMs or card machines at the visa counter. Bring $50 USD in crisp, undamaged bills.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Tanzania, not from your departure date. Double-check before you fly.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport and follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival'
At Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) or Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), follow the signs after passport control. There's a dedicated queue for visa-on-arrival applicants.
2
Fill out the visa application form
You'll be given a short form to complete. It asks for basic info: name, passport number, flight details, and where you're staying. Fill it out while waiting in line.
3
Pay the visa fee in cash (USD)
Hand over your passport, the completed form, and $50 USD (or equivalent in TZS). The officer will process payment and issue the visa sticker. Keep the receipt.
4
Receive your visa and proceed to immigration
The visa is stamped into your passport. Then go to the immigration counter for entry clearance. You'll be asked your purpose of visit and length of stay. Answer clearly.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel and proceed through customs. You're now legally in Tanzania.
