Algerian passport holders need a visa to enter the United Kingdom. You must apply for a Standard Visitor visa before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or e-visa option for Algerian nationals. Plan ahead, as the application process involves an online form, an in-person appointment, and a decision that can take several weeks.

Not available
Algerian passport holders are not eligible for the UK eVisa scheme. You must apply through the standard visa process at a British embassy or consulate. Not required
No e-visa option for Algerian nationals
Even though the UK has an e-visa system for some nationalities, Algerian passport holders are not eligible. You must apply through the standard visa process at the embassy/consulate — don't fall for websites offering 'fast-track e-visas' for Algerians.
Plan for the 3-week processing time
Don't book non-refundable flights or hotels until your visa is approved. The 3-week processing time is an estimate — it can be longer, especially if your application requires additional checks.
Overstaying is serious
The UK takes overstaying very seriously. If you stay beyond your visa's validity, you could be banned from re-entering the UK for up to 10 years. Always leave before your visa expires.

What happens at the border

1
Complete the online application
Go to the UK Visas and Immigration website, select 'Standard Visitor visa', and fill out the form. You'll need your passport details, travel plans, and address history. The form takes about 30-45 minutes.
2
Pay the fee and book your appointment
After submitting the form, pay the £115 fee online. Then book a biometric appointment at the UK Visa Application Centre in Algiers. Appointments are usually available within a few weeks, but slots fill up fast — book as early as possible.
3
Attend the biometric appointment
Arrive at the VAC with your printed appointment confirmation, passport, and supporting documents. You'll provide fingerprints and a photo. The staff will also check your documents and may ask questions about your trip.
4
Wait for the decision
Processing typically takes 3 weeks after your appointment, but can be longer during peak seasons. You'll receive an email when a decision is made, and your passport will be returned via the VAC (either by courier or pickup).
5
Travel to the UK
Once you have your visa, you can travel. At UK border control, present your passport with the visa vignette. The officer may ask about your trip — have your return ticket and accommodation details handy.

Transiting through United Kingdom

Transit visa required

Algerian nationals require a Visitor in Transit visa to pass through UK border control, even if staying airside. A Direct Airside Transit visa (DATV) is not sufficient for Algeria; you must obtain a Visitor in Transit visa before travel.

Exceptions & conditions
  • Holders of a valid UK, EU, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or Ireland visa or residence permit may be exempt, but must still meet UK transit requirements.
  • Holders of a valid Schengen visa with a confirmed onward ticket may be exempt in some cases, but check with the UK Home Office.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing takes about 3 weeks after your biometric appointment. However, it can take longer during peak seasons (summer and Christmas). You can pay extra for priority processing (5 working days) or super priority (next day) if available at the Algiers VAC — check when booking.
No. While the application form is online, you must attend an in-person biometric appointment at the UK Visa Application Centre in Algiers. There is no e-visa option for Algerian passport holders.
The Standard Visitor visa allows a maximum stay of 6 months per visit. You can't extend it while in the UK, so plan your trip accordingly.
Yes. You need to show you have enough money to cover your trip without working in the UK. Bank statements from the last 6 months, pay slips, or a sponsor letter are typical evidence. There's no fixed amount, but it should match your travel plans.
No. The Standard Visitor visa is for tourism, visiting family, or business activities like meetings. You cannot take paid or unpaid work, and you can't enrol in a course longer than 30 days. For work or study, you'd need a different visa type.
You'll receive a refusal letter explaining the reasons. You can reapply, but you'll need to address the issues and pay the fee again. There's no appeal for visitor visas, so it's better to ensure your application is complete and accurate the first time.
No. The TB test is only required if you're staying in the UK for more than 6 months. For a standard tourist visit, you don't need it.
