Algerian passport holders need an eVisa to enter South Africa. The eVisa system launched in 2025 and covers tourism and short business visits. You must apply online before you travel — there's no visa on arrival for Algerian citizens.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Algerian passport holders need an eVisa to enter South Africa. Apply online at the South African Department of Home Affairs portal — processing takes a few business days. Print the approval letter and carry it with your passport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
At least 2 blank pages
Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure from South Africa. Two blank pages are required for entry and exit stamps.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket before granting entry. Have a printed or digital copy ready — airlines also check this at check-in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in South Africa. Border officials may ask for it if your stay seems unclear.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Show you can support yourself during your stay — a recent bank statement or enough cash (around 3,000 ZAR per day) works. Officers rarely ask, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
eVisa is not a guarantee of entry
Having an approved eVisa does not guarantee you'll be let into South Africa. Immigration officers at the border make the final decision. They can refuse entry if they're not satisfied with your documents, funds, or purpose of visit.
No visa on arrival for Algerian passport holders
You cannot get a visa at the airport. You must have the eVisa approved before you fly. Airlines check this before letting you board — no eVisa, no boarding.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official South African eVisa website. Fill in your personal details, upload a digital passport photo, and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around 425 ZAR, roughly $23 USD) with a credit card. Processing takes 5–10 business days — apply at least 2 weeks before your trip.
2
Receive and save your eVisa approval
You'll get an email with your eVisa approval letter. Print a copy and save a PDF on your phone. The eVisa is linked to your passport number electronically, but having a physical copy avoids problems if systems are down.
3
Prepare your documents for departure
Before heading to the airport, gather: your passport, printed eVisa, return ticket, first night accommodation booking, and travel insurance documents. Keep them in a single folder in your carry-on.
4
Arrive at a South African airport and go through immigration
At OR Tambo (Johannesburg), Cape Town International, or King Shaka (Durban), follow signs to 'Foreign Passports.' Have your passport, eVisa, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will check your documents, take fingerprints, and stamp your passport. The whole process usually takes 10–20 minutes.

Yes. The eVisa is valid for entry at all international airports: OR Tambo (Johannesburg), Cape Town International, King Shaka (Durban), and others. Land border crossings may also accept it, but airports are the most straightforward.
Both work, but printing a copy is safer. If the immigration system is down or your phone dies, a paper copy saves you hassle. Keep it with your passport.
