Apply only on the official ETA site
Use https://eta.gov.lk/ directly. Many third-party websites charge double or triple the official fee and sometimes don't process your application at all. The official site is in English and takes about 10 minutes.
Passport validity is non-negotiable
Sri Lanka requires 6 months of passport validity from your arrival date. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding even if you have an approved ETA. Check your passport now and renew if needed.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your ETA online
Go to https://eta.gov.lk/ and fill out the application. You'll need your passport details, travel dates, and a valid email. Pay the fee online with a credit or debit card. Approval usually comes within 1–2 business days, but apply at least a week before to be safe.
2
Check your email for approval
You'll receive an email with your ETA approval. Print it or save it on your phone. Double-check that your name and passport number match exactly — any typo can cause problems at the border.
3
At the airport in Egypt
When checking in for your flight, the airline will verify your ETA. Show them the approval email or printout. They may also ask for your return ticket and accommodation details.
4
Arrival at Sri Lankan immigration
At Bandaranaike International Airport (Colombo) or any other entry point, join the 'Foreign Passport' queue. Present your passport and the ETA approval. The officer will stamp you in for up to 30 days. Have your accommodation address ready if asked.
5
Enjoy your stay and exit on time
Your ETA is valid for 30 days from arrival. If you want to stay longer, you must apply for an extension at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo before your 30 days are up. Overstaying can lead to fines and future visa issues.

Frequently asked questions

The official ETA website (https://eta.gov.lk/) typically processes applications within 1–2 business days. However, it's wise to apply at least a week before your flight to account for any delays or weekends. There's also an emergency option at the airport, but it costs more and isn't guaranteed.
The standard ETA fee for tourism is around $35–$40 USD, payable online during the application. The exact amount may vary slightly, so check the official website. Avoid third-party sites that charge extra — use the official portal.
Yes, you can apply for an extension at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo. The extension is usually granted for up to 6 months, but it's not automatic. You must apply before your current ETA expires. Fees apply, and the process can take a few days. It's best to do this early in your stay.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined per day of overstay (around $25–$50 per day), and in severe cases, you could be detained or banned from future visits. Always keep track of your entry stamp date and leave before it expires.
If you're staying in the airport transit area and not passing through immigration, you don't need an ETA. But if you plan to leave the airport or stay overnight, you'll need the ETA. Check with your airline if you're unsure.
There is an on-arrival ETA facility at Bandaranaike International Airport, but it's more expensive and not guaranteed — you could be turned away if the system is down or if you don't meet requirements. It's strongly recommended to apply online in advance.
The standard tourist ETA is for a single entry. If you leave Sri Lanka and want to return, you'll need to apply for a new ETA. There are multiple-entry options for business purposes, but for tourism, single entry is the norm.
