Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa at Maputo International Airport or other land borders. Have 50 USD cash ready for the single-entry tourist visa (30 days). The queue moves slowly — bring a pen to fill out the arrival form while waiting.Check visa detailsRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months from entry date
Your passport needs at least two blank pages for the visa sticker and entry stamp. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires within 6 months, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mozambique
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket. A printed itinerary or a digital copy on your phone works. If you are overlanding out, show a bus ticket or a letter explaining your exit plan.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have your first night's hotel confirmation ready. If staying with friends, a simple invitation letter with their address and phone number is fine. Officers rarely ask, but better to have it.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Carry at least 500 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing sufficient funds. ATMs in Maputo dispense meticais, but cash is king for visa fees and small purchases.Recommended
Cash only for visa fee
The visa on arrival counter only accepts cash — no credit or debit cards. Bring $50 USD in crisp bills (no tears or marks) or the equivalent in Mozambican meticais. ATMs are available after you clear immigration, so you can't withdraw cash to pay the fee.
Arrival card — keep the stub
You'll fill out an arrival card on the plane or at immigration. The officer will give you a stub after stamping your passport. Keep it with your passport — you'll need to hand it back when you leave Mozambique.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Maputo or Beira airport
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Visa on Arrival'. At Maputo International Airport (MPM), the visa counter is just before the passport control booths. Join the queue for 'Visa on Arrival' — it's separate from the main immigration line.
2
Present documents and pay fee
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card (usually given on the plane), and your return ticket. Pay the visa fee in cash — $50 USD is standard for a single-entry tourist visa. The officer will process your visa and stick it into your passport.
3
Proceed to passport control
Once you have the visa sticker, move to the passport control queue. The officer will stamp you in. Keep your arrival card stub — you'll need it when you leave.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually a quick bag scan. You're free to enter Mozambique.
