Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in the UK. No minimum validity period beyond your stay is required, but airlines may still check for 6 months — carry a printout of the UK government rule if challenged.Required
ETA application
Electronic Travel Authorisation required since January 2025
Apply for an ETA at gov.uk/apply-uk-visa before you fly. The £10 fee covers multiple trips over 2 years. Approval usually comes within minutes, but apply at least 72 hours before departure to be safe.Apply for ETARequired
Return or onward ticket
Immigration officers routinely check this
UK Border Force officers ask for proof of onward travel at passport control. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready. Budget airlines may also check this at check-in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host with their address and contact details. Officers at Heathrow and Gatwick sometimes ask for this, especially if you're staying longer than a week.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Have a recent bank statement or credit card showing you can support yourself. There's no fixed amount, but around £50–£100 per day is a safe benchmark. Officers rarely ask for this for Spanish passport holders, but it's better to have it.Recommended
Brexit changed the rules
Since January 2021, Spanish citizens can no longer use EU/EEA fast-track lanes at UK borders. You must use the 'All Other Passports' queue. Also, you cannot use the UK's 'EU Settlement Scheme' if you haven't lived in the UK before 2021.
Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) coming soon
The UK plans to introduce an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for visa-free visitors, including Spanish passport holders, likely in 2024 or 2025. It will be an online application costing around £10, valid for 2 years. Check the UK government website before your trip.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at UK border
Join the 'All Other Passports' queue at airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, or Manchester. At Eurostar or ferry ports, use the non-UK/Ireland lane.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport to the Border Force officer. They may ask about your trip purpose, length of stay, and where you're staying.
3
Answer questions honestly
Common questions: 'How long are you staying?', 'Where are you staying?', 'What's the purpose of your visit?', 'Do you have a return ticket?' Answer clearly and briefly.
4
Receive entry stamp
If approved, the officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the date you must leave. Check the stamp before walking away.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After the border, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked bags) and then through customs. Green channel for most tourists.
