Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
ETA-IL applicationETA-IL: Israel's Electronic Travel Authorisation, mandatory for all visa-exempt nationals since August 2024. Apply free at israel-entry.piba.gov.il — usually approved instantly.
Electronic Travel Authorisation
Apply for your ETA-IL at israel-entry.piba.gov.il before you fly. It's free and usually approved instantly — I got mine in under 2 minutes. You need this even if you're just transiting through Ben Gurion Airport.Apply for ETA-ILRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for duration of stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Israel. No 6-month rule here — just make sure it doesn't expire before you leave. Airlines sometimes check this at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers at Ben Gurion will ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or show it on your phone. A bus ticket to Jordan or a flight to Cyprus works fine.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep your hotel confirmation or a letter from your host handy. I've been asked for it maybe once in five trips, but better to have it than to waste time at the counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or card for your stay
Have access to enough money for your trip — a credit card and a few hundred shekels in cash is fine. They rarely ask, but if you look like you're traveling on a shoestring, they might.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Israel. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to fly. Renew early if needed.
Keep a copy of your return ticket
Immigration officers at Ben Gurion Airport frequently ask to see your return or onward ticket. Have a screenshot or printed copy ready — it speeds things up and avoids extra questions.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before your flight
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of both on your phone. Arrange travel insurance and a local eSIM if you want data immediately on landing.
2
Arrive at Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) or land border
Most travellers fly into Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport. Follow signs to 'Passport Control' — there are separate queues for Israeli citizens and foreigners. Join the 'Foreign Passports' line.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer will ask a few questions: purpose of visit, where you're staying, how long, and your return plans. Answer clearly and briefly. They may ask to see your return ticket or accommodation confirmation — have them ready on your phone.
4
Receive entry stamp and proceed
If everything is in order, the officer stamps your passport with a 90-day entry permit. You're free to collect your luggage and exit. The whole process usually takes 5–15 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable for tourism. If you need to stay longer, you must leave Israel before day 90 and re-enter after a period outside the country. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
You will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month validity is strictly enforced.
The West Bank is accessible from Israel with your standard entry stamp — no additional visa needed for most areas. Gaza requires a separate permit from the Israeli authorities, which is rarely granted to tourists. Check current travel advisories before crossing.
Yes, Spain has no restrictions on Israeli stamps. However, if you plan to visit certain Arab countries later (e.g., Lebanon, Syria, Iran), they may deny entry if they see an Israeli stamp. You can ask the Israeli officer to stamp a separate piece of paper instead of your passport — they usually accommodate this.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined (around 500–1000 ILS per day overstay), detained, and potentially banned from re-entering Israel for a period. Leave before day 90.
No, it's not a legal requirement for Spanish passport holders. But it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Israel are high — a simple emergency room visit can cost hundreds of euros. Insurance also covers trip cancellation and lost luggage.
No. There is no arrival declaration or electronic travel authorization required for Spanish citizens. Just show up with your passport and documents.
