Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay in Turkey
Your Spanish passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay. Turkey does not enforce a 6-month validity rule for Spanish passport holders — just make sure it does not expire before you leave.Required
Return or onward ticket
Immigration may ask for proof of departure
Have a return or onward ticket ready. Turkish border officers ask for it at passport control, especially if you arrive without a clear departure plan. A printed booking confirmation or a digital copy on your phone works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Carry evidence of sufficient funds — a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least €50 per day of your stay. Border officers rarely check this for Spanish passport holders, but it is a legal requirement.Recommended
No visa needed, but don't skip the basics
You don't need to apply for anything before travel, but immigration can still ask for a return ticket and proof of accommodation. Have them ready on your phone.
Overstaying is expensive
If you stay beyond 90 days, you'll be fined per day over (around 10–20 EUR/day) and risk a re-entry ban. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Turkish airport
At Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' or 'Yabancı Pasaport'. Join the queue for non-Turkish citizens.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport and any requested documents (return ticket, hotel booking). The officer will check your passport validity and stamp you in. No forms to fill.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. The whole process usually takes 15–30 minutes outside peak hours.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day visa-free stay is not extendable. If you overstay, you'll face fines (around 50–100 EUR depending on days over) and may be banned from re-entering for a period. To stay longer, you'd need to apply for a residence permit before your 90 days expire.
No. For stays under 90 days, there's no registration requirement. If you stay longer (with a residence permit), you must register with the local police within 30 days of arrival.
You'll be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. The 6-month validity is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling.
It's risky. Turkish immigration may refuse entry if the passport is significantly damaged (torn pages, water damage, unreadable data). Best to get a new passport before travel.
If you stay airside (don't pass through immigration), no visa is needed. If you want to leave the airport during a layover, you can enter visa-free as long as your total stay in Turkey stays under 90 days.
Children need their own passport (no longer possible to be on a parent's passport for most countries). The same 6-month validity rule applies. If traveling with only one parent, carry a notarized consent letter from the other parent — it's not always checked, but it can prevent issues.
Technically, the visa-free entry is for tourism and business (meetings, conferences). Remote work for a foreign employer is a gray area. Many digital nomads do it, but officially you should not be 'working' for a Turkish company without a work permit. For long-term remote work, consider a digital nomad visa (Turkey has one, but it's separate from the visa-free entry).
