Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Mexico. Mexico does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but some airlines may enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mexico
Immigration officers at Mexico City, Cancún, and other airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking showing you leave within 180 days.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a letter from your host. Officers may ask for it during entry questioning, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have access to at least $500 USD or equivalent in cash, credit cards, or bank statements. Immigration rarely checks this for Spanish passport holders, but it helps if asked about your travel plans.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check your passport validity before boarding. If you have less than 6 months remaining, you will likely be denied boarding. Double-check your passport's expiry date well before your flight.
Keep your FMM stub safe
The bottom half of the immigration form is your proof of legal entry. You must return it when you leave. Losing it means a fine and extra paperwork at the airport. Store it with your passport.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you travel, ensure your passport has 6+ months validity and at least one blank page. Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots or print confirmations.
2
Complete the immigration form
You'll receive a Multiple Immigration Form (FMM) on your flight or at the airport. Fill it out with your personal details, flight info, and accommodation address. Keep the bottom half — you'll need to return it when you leave.
3
Go through immigration
At Mexico City (MEX), Cancún (CUN), or any other airport, join the 'Foreigners' queue. Hand over your passport and completed FMM. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer honestly. You'll get a stamp and the FMM stub back.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. You may be selected for a random bag check. If not, walk through the green channel and you're free to go.
5
Keep your FMM stub safe
Store the FMM stub with your passport. You'll need to hand it in when you leave Mexico. Losing it means a fine (around 500–600 MXN) and extra paperwork at the airport.

Frequently asked questions

No, the 180-day stay is not extendable for tourism. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to leave Mexico (e.g., to Guatemala or Belize) and re-enter. Immigration may grant fewer days on re-entry, so it's not guaranteed.
Overstaying is a violation. You'll be fined when you leave — typically around 500–600 MXN per day overstayed, up to a maximum. You may also be banned from re-entering Mexico for a period. Always leave before your stamp expires.
No, Spanish passport holders do not need a visa for transit. You can stay in the international transit area without passing immigration. If you need to leave the airport or stay overnight, you'll need to go through immigration and get a tourist permit.
Technically, the tourist permit does not allow paid work for a Mexican employer. However, remote work for a foreign company is generally tolerated. There is no specific 'digital nomad' visa yet, but you can stay up to 180 days. Be discreet and don't mention working when asked by immigration.
You'll need to get a replacement before leaving Mexico. Go to the immigration office (INM) at the airport or in the city. You'll fill out a form and pay a fine (around 500–600 MXN). Allow extra time at the airport to sort this out.
Yes, an onward ticket to any country outside Mexico works. It can be a flight, bus, or boat ticket. The key is proof that you will leave Mexico within your allowed stay.
No, you don't need any visa — you get a tourist permit (FMM) on arrival for free. Just present your passport and fill out the form. No payment is required for stays up to 180 days.
