Spanish passport holders need a visa to enter New Zealand in 2026. You must apply for a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before you travel — this is not a visa on arrival. The process is entirely online and takes about 10 minutes.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
NZeTA applicationNZeTA: New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority — required for visa-exempt visitors. Apply at immigration.govt.nz or via the NZeTA app ($17 NZD). Takes minutes to approve.
Electronic Travel Authority
Apply for an NZeTA before you fly — it's mandatory for Spanish passport holders. Use the official NZeTA website or app ($17 NZD via app, $23 NZD via website). You'll also pay the International Visitor Levy ($35 NZD) at the same time. Approval usually takes minutes.Apply for NZeTARequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for duration of stay
Your Spanish passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in New Zealand. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by New Zealand immigration, but airlines may enforce 3–6 months validity — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from New Zealand
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking out of New Zealand ready. Without one, you may be denied boarding or entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Evidence of sufficient money for your stay
Carry bank statements or a credit card showing you can support yourself. New Zealand doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but having at least NZD 1,000 per month of stay is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Apply early — don't risk it
The NZeTA can take up to 2 weeks if your application triggers additional checks. Apply at least 7 days before your flight to avoid last-minute stress.
NZeTA is valid for 2 years
Once approved, your NZeTA is valid for up to 2 years for multiple visits, each up to 3 months. If you renew your passport, you'll need to transfer the NZeTA to the new passport.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for NZeTA online
Go to the official Immigration New Zealand website or download the NZeTA app. Fill in your passport details, travel plans, and answer a few health and character questions. Pay the fee (NZD $9–$12) and submit. You'll receive an email confirmation within minutes, and approval typically comes within 72 hours.
2
Book your flight and accommodation
Book a return or onward ticket and your first night's accommodation. Keep the confirmation emails or screenshots on your phone. If you're staying with friends, have their address and phone number ready.
3
Pack your documents
Print or save digital copies of your NZeTA approval, passport, onward ticket, and accommodation confirmation. Also have your travel insurance policy number handy.
4
Arrive at Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch Airport
At immigration, present your passport and NZeTA (they'll check it electronically). You may be asked for your onward ticket and accommodation details. The officer will stamp your passport and you'll be free to enter.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, you still need an NZeTA even if you're only transiting. The same online application applies. The NZeTA is valid for up to 2 years for multiple visits.
Most applications are approved within 72 hours, but it can take up to 2 weeks if additional checks are needed. Apply at least a week before your flight to be safe.
No, the NZeTA allows a maximum stay of 3 months per visit. You cannot extend it. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a different visa before your current one expires.
You must have a valid passport for the entire duration of your stay. If your passport expires, you'll need to renew it at the Spanish embassy in Wellington. Once renewed, you must update your NZeTA with the new passport details.
Immigration officers may ask how you'll support yourself during your stay. Having a credit card or bank statement showing sufficient funds (at least NZD $1,000 per month) is a good idea, though not always required.
No. The NZeTA is for tourism, visiting family, or short business trips only. You cannot work or study. If you plan to work or study, you need a specific work or student visa.
If your NZeTA is denied, you'll receive a reason. You can reapply with corrected information or apply for a different visa type. Contact Immigration New Zealand for guidance.
