Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Japan
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — just enough to cover your stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the 6-month rule anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Japan
Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Enforcement varies by officer, but having one printed or on your phone avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, not having it can mean extra questioning.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card ready. There is no fixed minimum, but around ¥100,000 (roughly €650) for a short trip is a safe benchmark. Officers almost never check it for Spanish passport holders.Recommended

Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Japan. Airlines check this before boarding, and immigration checks it on arrival. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before booking your flight.
Visit Japan Web saves time at the airport
Registering on Visit Japan Web (free at https://vjw-lp.digital.go.jp) lets you skip the paper customs form and speeds up immigration. You can do it up to 2 weeks before your trip. It's not mandatory, but it makes arrival much smoother.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date), print or save your return ticket and first-night hotel booking, and optionally register on Visit Japan Web. If you want to skip the airport queue for a SIM, buy an eSIM online before you go.
2
Arrive at a Japanese airport and go to immigration
At Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or any other international airport, follow the signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport and completed Visit Japan Web QR code (if you registered) ready. The officer will take your photo and fingerprints.
3
Show your return ticket if asked
The immigration officer may ask to see your onward ticket. Have it open on your phone or a printed copy. They rarely ask for proof of funds for Spanish passport holders, but it's wise to have a bank statement or credit card available.
4
Collect your luggage and go through customs
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. If you registered on Visit Japan Web, use the QR code at the customs kiosk. Otherwise, fill out a paper customs declaration form. You'll hand it to the officer on your way out.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer, you need to apply for a different visa (like a work or student visa) before you travel. Overstaying even a day can result in fines, detention, or a ban from re-entering Japan.
Spanish passport holders are rarely asked for proof of funds, but it's smart to have a credit card or bank statement available. If asked, show you have enough for your stay — roughly ¥10,000 per day is a safe benchmark.
You will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. If you have a valid visa in an old passport, bring both passports.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and short-term visits only. You cannot work for a Japanese company or do paid work for a foreign company while in Japan on this status. Remote work for a foreign employer is technically not allowed, though enforcement is rare for short stays.
If you are transiting through a Japanese airport and staying airside (not passing immigration), you do not need a visa. If you need to enter Japan (e.g., to switch airports or stay overnight), you need a visa unless you qualify for the visa-free program. Spanish passport holders can enter visa-free for up to 90 days, so a short transit is fine.
Visit Japan Web is a free online system where you pre-register your passport, customs, and quarantine info. It's optional but highly recommended because it lets you skip the paper forms and use a QR code at immigration and customs. Register at https://vjw-lp.digital.go.jp up to 2 weeks before your trip.
Yes, you can leave and re-enter Japan as many times as you want within the 90-day period, as long as each stay is for tourism or business. However, immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits. If you plan to stay for nearly 90 days, leave and come back, be prepared to explain your travel plans.
