Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply online before travel
Ethiopian passport holders need an eVisa to enter the UAE. Apply at the ICA Smart Services portal at least 3 business days before departure. The eVisa is single-entry and valid for 30 days from issue.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity beyond your intended stay in the UAE. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from UAE
Immigration officers at Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or next destination booking ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel reservation confirmation or a letter from your UAE host. Immigration may ask where you're staying — having a printed booking avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or a credit card showing sufficient funds for your stay. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, you'll need to demonstrate at least 500 AED per day of your visit.Recommended
No visa on arrival for Ethiopian passports
Unlike many other nationalities, Ethiopian passport holders cannot get a visa on arrival in the UAE. You must have an approved eVisa before you board your flight. Airlines check this at check-in.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in the UAE, not from your departure date. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before applying.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the UAE's official smart services portal (smartservices.ica.gov.ae) and fill out the eVisa application. You'll need your passport details, a digital photo, and your travel dates. Pay the fee online — typically around 300–500 AED depending on processing speed. Approval usually takes 2–5 working days.
2
Receive and print your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get a PDF by email. Print a copy and save it on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and at UAE immigration.
3
Arrive at a UAE airport
At Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Sharjah airport, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and join the queue for 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport, eVisa printout, and return ticket ready. The officer will scan your passport, stamp it, and let you through. The whole process usually takes 10–20 minutes.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. There's nothing special to declare unless you're carrying large amounts of cash or restricted items. Then you're free to leave.
