Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa for AustraliaYou cannot board a flight to Australia without a valid visa or eVisitor approval.
Visitor visa (subclass 600) or appropriate visa
Ethiopian passport holders must obtain a visa before travelling to Australia. Apply online via the Department of Home Affairs (Immigration and Citizenship) for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) or other relevant visa. Processing times vary; apply well in advance.Required
Passport validityAustralian immigration requires your passport to remain valid for the entire stay, but 6 months is the standard minimum to avoid issues.
At least 6 months validity
Your Ethiopian passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your intended date of arrival in Australia.Required
Blank passport pagesImmigration officers need a clean page to stamp your passport.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least 1 blank page for the entry stamp upon arrival in Australia.Required
Return or onward ticketAustralian border officials may ask to see your outbound travel plans.
Proof of departure from Australia
You must hold a confirmed return or onward ticket to leave Australia before your visa expires. This is a standard requirement for visitor visa holders.Required
Proof of sufficient fundsHaving bank statements or cash on hand helps demonstrate you won't become a burden on public funds.
Financial capacity for stay
You may be asked to show evidence of sufficient funds to cover your accommodation, living expenses, and return travel during your stay in Australia. This is not always requested but is part of the visa conditions.Recommended
Arrival declarationYou'll fill out a paper form on the plane, not an online declaration.
Incoming Passenger Card
Australia does not require a separate electronic arrival declaration for Ethiopian passport holders. You will complete a paper Incoming Passenger Card (IPC) on board the flight before landing. Not required
Visa application supporting documentsIncomplete applications can be delayed or refused, so double-check the checklist on the Home Affairs website.
For online application
When applying for the Visitor visa (subclass 600), you will need to provide a valid passport, recent passport-sized photo, travel itinerary, proof of financial capacity, and possibly an invitation letter if visiting family or friends. All documents must be in English or translated.Required
Apply early — no exceptions
Australian visas are not issued on arrival. Start your application at least 2 months before your trip. Last-minute applications risk missing your flight.
Visa is electronic
Your approved visa is linked to your passport number. You don't need a sticker, but carry a printed copy of the grant letter in case of system issues at check-in.
Overstaying is serious
The Visitor visa is not extendable. Overstaying even a day can lead to detention, deportation, and a 3-year re-entry ban. Leave before your visa expires.

What happens at the border

1
Determine your visa type
Visit the Australian Department of Home Affairs website and use the Visa Finder tool to see which visa fits your purpose (tourist, business, study, etc.). Most Ethiopian travellers use the Visitor visa (subclass 600).
2
Gather your documents
Collect your passport, passport-sized photo, proof of funds, travel itinerary, and any supporting letters. Scan them as PDFs or JPEGs for upload.
3
Apply online via ImmiAccount
Create an ImmiAccount at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au, fill in the application form, upload your documents, and pay the visa application fee (currently AUD 190 for a Visitor visa, subject to change).
4
Wait for processing
Processing times vary — for Ethiopian applicants, expect anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks. You can check status online. You may be asked for additional documents or an interview.
5
Receive your visa grant
Once approved, you'll receive a visa grant notification by email. Check that your name, passport number, and visa conditions are correct. The visa is electronically linked to your passport.
6
Arrive in Australia
At the airport, proceed to the ePassport or staffed immigration counter. Have your passport ready — the officer will scan it and may ask about your stay. No paper visa is needed.
