Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply online before travel
Apply for a Malawi eVisa at the official immigration portal. Processing takes 3–5 business days, so apply at least a week before your flight. Print the approval letter and carry it with your passport — immigration at Kamuzu International Airport will stamp you in.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your Ethiopian passport needs at least one blank page for the entry stamp. Malawi does not enforce a strict 6-month validity rule, but your passport must cover your entire stay. Airlines may still ask for 6 months — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Malawi
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. If you are flying out to a neighboring country, a bus or flight booking works. Without one, you may be denied boarding or entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Immigration rarely checks it, but budget airlines sometimes ask before issuing a boarding pass.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry cash (USD or Malawi Kwacha) or a bank statement showing at least $300–$500 for a short stay. Immigration may ask how you plan to cover expenses — a credit card and a few hundred dollars in cash usually satisfies them.Recommended
eVisa required — no visa on arrival
Ethiopian passport holders cannot get a visa on arrival in Malawi. You must have an approved eVisa before you travel. Airlines will check this at check-in.
Yellow fever vaccine required if coming from Ethiopia
Ethiopia is a yellow fever endemic country. You’ll need to show a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate (the Yellow Card) when entering Malawi. Get the vaccine at least 10 days before travel.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for eVisa online
Go to the official Malawi eVisa website. Fill in your personal and passport details, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around $50–$75 depending on processing speed). Submit and wait for approval — typically 3–5 business days.
2
Print or save eVisa approval
Once approved, you’ll receive an email with your eVisa. Print a copy and also save a PDF on your phone. You’ll show this at check-in and on arrival.
3
Arrive at Kamuzu International Airport (Lilongwe) or Chileka Airport (Blantyre)
At immigration, present your passport, eVisa approval, return ticket, and accommodation booking. The officer will stamp you in. The process usually takes 10–15 minutes if you have all documents ready.
