Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa at Maputo International Airport or other land borders. Have 50 USD in cash for a single-entry tourist visa (30 days). Bring two passport-size photos and a printout of your hotel booking — the officer may ask for it.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for 6 months beyond your stay
Your Ethiopian passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your date of entry into Mozambique. Airlines at Bole International Airport check this before boarding — no exceptions.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
Immigration officers at Maputo Airport routinely ask for a printed or digital onward ticket. If you don't have one, they may deny the visa on arrival. Book a refundable ticket if your plans are flexible.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to have ready
Have a hotel booking confirmation or an invitation letter from your host. Officers at the visa-on-arrival counter sometimes ask for an address in Mozambique — a printed booking covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to have ready
Carry at least 500 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing you can support yourself. Visa-on-arrival officers rarely check this, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Cash only — no cards
The visa on arrival fee must be paid in cash, preferably US dollars. ATMs are available after immigration but the visa office won't take cards. Bring crisp, non-torn bills — older or damaged notes may be refused.
Visa on arrival is not extendable
Once you get the visa on arrival, you cannot extend it. If you need to stay longer than the allowed period, you'll need to leave and re-enter, or apply for a different visa type before travel.

What happens at the border

1
Land at Maputo International Airport (MPM)
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Visa on Arrival'. There's a dedicated counter for visa applications before the main passport control queue.
2
Fill out the visa application form
You'll get a small form to complete. It asks for basic info: name, passport number, flight details, address in Mozambique. Have your booking confirmations handy.
3
Submit documents and pay the fee
Hand over your passport, completed form, passport photo (if they ask), and cash. The officer will process the visa — usually takes 5–15 minutes. They'll give you a receipt.
4
Get your visa sticker and proceed to passport control
Once the visa is issued, you'll get a sticker in your passport. Then join the main passport control queue. Show your passport with the new visa, and you're in.

Frequently asked questions

The standard single-entry tourist visa on arrival costs around USD 50. Business visas may cost more (USD 100+). Always bring extra cash in case of price changes. The visa office only accepts cash — no cards.
No, the visa on arrival is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you'd have to leave and re-enter, or apply for a different visa type before travel. Plan your trip accordingly.
Visa on arrival is available at all major entry points, including Maputo International Airport, Beira Airport, and the Ressano Garcia land border with South Africa. At smaller crossings, it's less reliable — best to enter through a major port.
Mozambique requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. Ethiopia is not on that list, so you likely won't need it. But if you've recently traveled to a risk country, you'll need proof of vaccination.
If you're transiting and not leaving the airport, you don't need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport or stay overnight, you'll need the visa on arrival. The same requirements apply.
Immigration may deny you entry. They want proof you'll leave. If you don't have a fixed return, book a refundable onward ticket or a cheap bus/flight out of the country. A screenshot on your phone is usually accepted.
Yes, it's available during normal immigration hours. If you arrive late at night or on a public holiday, the visa counter may be closed. In that case, you might be processed at passport control directly — but it's less predictable. Best to arrive during daytime.
