Ethiopian passport holders need an eVisa to enter South Africa for tourism or business visits. The eVisa system is straightforward, but you must apply online before you travel. As of 2026, there is no visa-on-arrival option for Ethiopian citizens.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply online before travel
Apply for a South African eVisa at the Department of Home Affairs portal. Processing takes 5–10 business days, so apply at least 2 weeks before departure. You'll need a digital passport photo, flight itinerary, and proof of accommodation.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must have 2 blank pages
Your Ethiopian passport must be valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure from South Africa. Carry two consecutive blank visa pages — immigration officers at OR Tambo and Cape Town check this strictly.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
South African immigration requires a confirmed return or onward ticket. Airlines at Bole International Airport will check this before boarding. A printed itinerary or e-ticket works fine.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host letter
Have a hotel reservation or a letter from your host in South Africa ready. Immigration officers at Johannesburg and Cape Town ask for this regularly, especially for first-time visitors.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Carry a recent bank statement showing at least 3,000 ZAR per day of your stay, or have a credit card with sufficient limit. Immigration officers rarely check this for short visits, but it's safer to have it.Recommended
eVisa Only at These Airports
Your eVisa is only valid at OR Tambo (Johannesburg), Cape Town International, and King Shaka (Durban). If you arrive at any other airport or land border, you will be denied entry.
Passport Validity Counts from Entry Date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in South Africa, not from your departure date. Double-check before you apply.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa Online
Go to the official South African eVisa website (ehome.dha.gov.za). Fill in the application form, upload your passport scan and a digital photo, and pay the fee (around ZAR 1,350, roughly $75 USD). Processing takes 5–10 business days.
2
Receive and Print Your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get a PDF via email. Print a copy and also save it on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and at immigration.
3
Prepare Your Documents for Travel
Pack your passport, printed eVisa, return ticket, hotel booking, and travel insurance. Keep them in your carry-on for easy access.
4
Arrive at a Designated Port of Entry
The eVisa is valid only at specific airports: OR Tambo (Johannesburg), Cape Town International, and King Shaka (Durban). Land borders are not accepted for eVisa holders.
5
Go Through Immigration
At the immigration counter, hand over your passport and eVisa. The officer may ask about your accommodation and return plans. Answer clearly. You'll receive an entry stamp valid for up to 30 days.
