Finnish passport holders don't need a visa for short stays in the Czech Republic. As of 2026, you can travel freely within the Schengen Area, including the Czech Republic, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Finnish passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in the Czech Republic. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required for Schengen entry, but airlines sometimes ask for 6 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration at Prague Airport routinely asks for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. A bus or train ticket to a non-Schengen country works too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
You may need to show you have enough money for your stay — roughly 1,100 CZK per day (about €45). A bank statement or credit card usually satisfies this check.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you land in the Czech Republic, not your departure date. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before you travel — you can be denied boarding or entry.
Schengen 90/180-day rule applies
Your 90-day visa-free stay is for the entire Schengen Area, not just the Czech Republic. Days spent in France, Germany, Italy, etc., all count. Use the EU's short-stay calculator to avoid accidental overstays.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport or border
When you land at Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG) or cross a land border, join the 'All Passports' or 'Non-EU' queue. Have your passport ready. If you're arriving from another Schengen country, there's usually no passport check, but random checks happen.
2
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer clearly: state your purpose (tourism, business, visiting friends) and how long you plan to stay. Keep your phone with the ticket screenshot unlocked and ready.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is legible before walking away. This stamp starts your 90-day Schengen clock. If you don't get a stamp, ask for one — it's your proof of legal entry.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually nothing to declare for personal items. Exit into the arrivals hall.

Frequently asked questions

No. Finland is in the Schengen Area, so you can travel to the Czech Republic visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies to tourism, business, or visiting family.
You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day rolling period. This counts all days spent in any Schengen country. Use the Schengen calculator on the EU website to track your days if you travel frequently.
Overstaying can result in a fine, deportation, and a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 5 years. The fine varies but can be several hundred euros. Always leave before your 90 days are up.
Generally, no for tourism. Extensions are only granted for exceptional circumstances like medical emergencies or force majeure. You'd need to apply at the local Foreign Police department (Cizinecká policie) before your 90 days expire.
Yes. Immigration may ask for proof you plan to leave the Schengen Area. A bus or train ticket to a non-Schengen country (e.g., Switzerland, UK, or Croatia) works. A screenshot on your phone is fine.
You may be denied entry. The Czech Republic strictly enforces the 6-month validity rule. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before traveling. Minor wear is usually okay, but torn pages or water damage can cause problems.
No, it's not mandatory for visa-free entry. However, it's strongly recommended. Czech healthcare is excellent but expensive for uninsured visitors. A basic travel insurance policy covering medical emergencies and repatriation costs around €20-50 for a week.
