Finnish passport holders can travel to Hungary visa-free for short stays. As of 2026, you can enter Hungary and the entire Schengen Area without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Just make sure your passport meets the validity requirements and you have the usual travel documents ready.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Finnish passport only needs to be valid for the time you plan to stay in Hungary. Airlines sometimes enforce the old 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration at Budapest Airport routinely asks for a return or onward ticket. You need proof you'll leave the entire Schengen zone within 90 days — a ticket to another Schengen country doesn't count.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation or a host's address ready. Border officers at Budapest sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. Officers rarely check this for Finnish passport holders, but it's a legal requirement under Schengen rules.Recommended
Schengen Area rules apply
Hungary is part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day visa-free limit applies across all Schengen countries combined. Keep track of your days using the Schengen calculator on the EU website.
Passport validity is strict
Border officials check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it's close to expiring, renew it before you travel to avoid being denied boarding or entry.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Download or print confirmations. Arrange travel insurance and a local SIM or eSIM if you want.
2
Arrive at Budapest Airport or other entry point
At Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD), follow signs to 'Non-EU Passports' or 'All Passports'. Join the queue for non-Schengen arrivals. Have your passport and supporting documents ready.
3
Present your passport to the border officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or accommodation booking.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is legible before walking away. You're now cleared to stay up to 90 days in the Schengen Area.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to the entire Schengen Area, so days spent in other Schengen countries count toward the 90-day limit.
No, the visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a long-stay visa or residence permit from the Hungarian immigration office before your 90 days expire.
No, for stays under 90 days you do not need to register. If you stay longer than 90 days (with a visa or permit), registration is required.
You must have a valid passport for the entire duration of your stay. If it expires, you'll need to contact the Finnish embassy in Budapest to get an emergency travel document before you can leave.
No. The visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. Any work or study requires the appropriate visa or permit.
Overstaying can result in a fine, a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area, or both. The fine amount depends on the length of overstay. Always leave before your 90 days are up.
If you're transiting through a Hungarian airport and staying airside (not passing through immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you need to enter Hungary between flights, the visa-free rules apply.
