Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date from Malaysia. Airlines check this at check-in and immigration officers enforce it strictly.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Malaysia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket at the counter. Have a printed copy or a clear digital version on your phone ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Immigration may ask for it if you look like you're working or staying long-term.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement
Have at least 500 USD or equivalent in cash, a credit card, or a recent bank statement. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, you need to show you can support yourself.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check your passport validity before boarding. If you have less than 6 months left, you won't be allowed to fly. Double-check your passport's expiry date well before your trip.
Keep a copy of your return ticket
Immigration officers at KLIA and other entry points often ask for proof of onward travel. A screenshot or printed copy of your return flight or bus ticket is sufficient.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Malaysian airport
You'll go through immigration at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Penang, Langkawi, or other entry points. Join the 'Foreign Passport' queue. Have your passport, boarding pass, and return ticket ready.
2
Present documents to officer
Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer will check your passport validity, may ask your purpose of visit and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and a '90 days' validity. Check the stamp before leaving the counter. If the date is wrong, ask for correction immediately.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your checked bags from the carousel, then proceed through customs. Green channel if you have nothing to declare, red channel if you have items to declare.
