Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Tajikistan. Airlines at departure may enforce a 6-month validity rule, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Recommended for visa-free entry
Immigration officers at Dushanbe airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or next destination ticket ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Officers may request your hotel reservation or a letter from a host. Keep a printed confirmation or digital copy accessible on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Carry enough cash (USD or EUR) or a recent bank statement showing you can cover your stay. ATMs are scarce outside Dushanbe, so bring at least $50–100 per day in cash.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Tajikistan. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding. No exceptions.
No visa needed, but keep documents ready
Even though you don't need a visa, immigration officers may ask for your return ticket and hotel booking. Have them accessible on your phone or printed. It's rare but happens — being prepared avoids delays.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you travel, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date), print or save your return ticket and first night hotel booking, and consider getting travel insurance. Also arrange a local SIM or eSIM so you have data on arrival.
2
Arrive at Dushanbe International Airport (or land border)
Most French travellers fly into Dushanbe (DYU). At immigration, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will check your passport, ask your purpose of visit, and may ask for your return ticket or hotel address.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 30-day visa-free entry. Check the stamp says '30 days' before leaving the counter. If you need more time, you must apply for an extension at the Migration Service in Dushanbe before your 30 days expire.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel and proceed through customs. There's nothing else to fill in — no arrival declaration form is required for French passport holders.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for a visa before you travel (e.g., an e-visa or a visa from a Tajik embassy). Overstaying can result in fines and possible deportation.
No, French passport holders do not need to register with the Migration Service for stays up to 30 days. If you were on a visa longer than 30 days, registration would be required, but that doesn't apply here.
The same visa-free rules apply at all official land border crossings (e.g., from Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, or Afghanistan). You'll go through the same immigration process — passport check, stamp, and possible questions about your onward travel. Just make sure the border post is open to foreigners (most are, but check current conditions).
No. The visa-free entry is strictly for tourism, business visits, or transit. If you plan to work, study, or volunteer, you need a proper visa or work permit obtained before travel.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll likely be fined (around 100-300 TJS per day overstayed, but amounts vary) and could be banned from re-entering Tajikistan for a period. Always leave before your 30 days expire, or get a visa extension if eligible (though for visa-free entries, extensions are not possible).
No, there is no departure tax for air travel. For land borders, some crossings may charge a small fee (around 10-20 TJS), but it's not always enforced. Keep some local currency just in case.
No mandatory vaccinations for French passport holders. However, routine vaccines (MMR, DTP, polio) are recommended. Hepatitis A and typhoid are also suggested if you're eating street food or staying in rural areas. Check with your doctor 4-6 weeks before travel.
