British passport holders can travel to New Zealand without a traditional visa, but you'll need an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before you fly. The NZeTA is a quick online application, and you'll also need to pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) as part of the process. Here's everything you need to know for a smooth entry in 2026.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority)You must have an approved NZeTA before you board your flight to New Zealand.
eVisitor visa for UK passport holders
UK citizens must obtain an NZeTA (eVisitor visa) before travel. Apply online or via the official app at least 72 hours before departure. The NZeTA is valid for up to 2 years for multiple entries, with each stay up to 6 months. The application fee is NZD 17 (app) or NZD 23 (web), plus an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZD 100.Required
Passport validityIf your passport expires sooner, you may be denied boarding or entry.
At least 6 months beyond your intended departure date
Your UK passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you intend to leave New Zealand. Ensure your passport's expiry date is after this period.Required
Blank passport pagesA blank page is needed for the arrival stamp; without it, entry may be refused.
At least 1 blank page for entry stamp
Your passport must have at least 1 blank page (not counting the endorsement pages) for the immigration officer to affix an entry stamp.Required
Return or onward ticketImmigration may ask to see your outbound travel plans.
Proof of departure from New Zealand
You must hold a confirmed return or onward ticket to a country you are eligible to enter, showing that you will leave New Zealand before your visa or permitted stay expires.Required
Proof of sufficient fundsCarry bank statements or credit cards to prove you can support yourself.
For your stay
You may be asked to show evidence of sufficient funds to cover your stay. As a guideline, have at least NZD 1,000 per month of stay, or NZD 400 per month if your accommodation is prepaid.Required
Arrival declarationThis is a mandatory digital form, not a paper one, and must be submitted before you land.
New Zealand Traveller Declaration
You must complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration before arriving. This can be done online up to 24 hours before departure or via the app. It covers customs, biosecurity, and health information.Required
Visa extensionYou cannot extend your stay under this visa; plan your trip accordingly.
Not applicable
The NZeTA does not allow extensions. You must leave New Zealand before your 6-month stay expires. Overstaying can result in penalties and affect future travel. Not required
Biosecurity is serious
New Zealand has some of the strictest biosecurity rules in the world. Declare any food, plant material, animal products, or outdoor gear (tents, hiking boots, fishing equipment). Fines start at NZD 400 and can be much higher. When in doubt, declare it — the worst that happens is they take it.
ePassport gates are fast
At Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, British ePassport holders can use the automated eGates. No forms to fill in, just scan your passport and look at the camera. It takes about 30 seconds.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your NZeTA
Download the official NZeTA app (recommended) or use the Immigration New Zealand website. Fill in your details, pay the NZD 17/23 fee plus NZD 100 IVL, and submit. You'll get an email confirmation — keep it on your phone.
2
Check in for your flight
At the airline check-in counter, show your passport. The airline will verify your NZeTA electronically — it's linked to your passport number. If you haven't applied, you'll be turned away.
3
Arrive at Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch
Follow the 'Arrivals' signs. You'll go through passport control — ePassport gates are available for British citizens at Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. Just scan your passport and look at the camera. If you're not eligible or the gate fails, join the staffed queue.
4
Show your passport and answer questions
If you're in the staffed queue, hand over your passport. The officer may ask about your plans, accommodation, and how long you're staying. Answer honestly and confidently. You'll get an entry stamp (or a digital record) allowing up to 90 days.
5
Collect your bags and exit
After passport control, collect your luggage and walk through the biosecurity check. New Zealand has strict biosecurity — declare any food, outdoor gear, or animal products. If you're unsure, declare it. Fines for undeclared items are steep.

Frequently asked questions

No, you don't need a traditional visa. You need an NZeTA (Electronic Travel Authority) plus the IVL. It's a quick online application, not a visa interview.
You can stay up to 90 days per visit. The NZeTA is valid for 2 years for multiple entries.
The NZeTA itself is NZD 17 if you apply via the mobile app, or NZD 23 via the website. On top of that, you must pay the IVL of NZD 100. So total is NZD 117 or NZD 123.
Most applications are approved within 24 hours, but it can take up to 72 hours. Apply at least 3 days before your flight to be safe.
No, the NZeTA is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a visitor visa before your NZeTA expires — that's a different process.
You won't be allowed to board your flight. Airlines are required to check NZeTA status before issuing a boarding pass. There's no way to get one at the airport.
No, those are in free association with New Zealand, but they have their own entry rules. For the Cook Islands, British citizens get a 31-day visa on arrival. For Niue, you need a visa in advance — check with the Niue High Commission.
