Entry requirements

Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area. It must have been issued within the last 10 years and have at least two blank pages for entry stamps.Required

Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Austrian airports routinely ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing your departure from the Schengen zone within your visa's validity.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a confirmed hotel reservation for each night of your stay, or a signed invitation letter from your host in Austria. Officers at Vienna Airport sometimes ask to see this during passport control.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Austrian immigration may ask for bank statements or cash to prove you have at least €100 per day of your stay. Have recent statements or a credit card statement ready in case they request it.Recommended
No visa-on-arrival or e-visa
Ghanaian passport holders cannot get a visa at the airport or online. You must apply at the Austrian Embassy in Accra before you travel. Arriving without a visa means you will be denied entry and sent back on the next flight.

Austria is part of the Schengen zone. A visa for Austria lets you travel to 26 other European countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. But you must enter through Austria or have Austria as your main destination.

What happens at the border

1
Book your appointment at the Austrian Embassy in Accra
Contact the embassy by phone or email to schedule a visa appointment. Slots can fill up, so do this at least 3–4 weeks before your planned travel.
2
Prepare your documents
Gather all required documents: passport, application form, photos, flight itinerary, hotel booking, insurance, bank statements, and any additional supporting papers.
3
Attend the in-person interview
Go to the embassy at the appointed time. You will submit your documents, pay the visa fee (around €80 for adults), and possibly answer a few questions about your trip.
4
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days, but can extend to 30–45 days during peak seasons. Track your application via the embassy or VFS Global if they handle it.
5
Collect your passport with visa
Once approved, you will be notified to pick up your passport. Check the visa sticker for correct dates and your name. If anything is wrong, ask for correction immediately.
6
Arrive in Austria and pass immigration
At Vienna Airport or any Schengen entry point, present your passport with the visa, your return ticket, and proof of accommodation. The officer may ask about your plans — answer clearly and briefly.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing is 15 calendar days, but it can take 30–45 days during busy periods (summer, Christmas). Apply at least 4–6 weeks before your trip.
You fill out the application form online, but you must attend an in-person appointment at the Austrian Embassy in Accra to submit documents and give biometrics. There is no fully online e-visa for Ghanaian passport holders.
The Schengen visa fee is €80 for adults (about 1,200 GHS at current rates). Children 6–12 pay €40, and children under 6 are free. Fees are paid at the embassy in cash or by bank transfer — check their current policy.
You cannot extend a short-stay Schengen visa in Austria except in very rare emergencies (e.g., medical reasons). Overstaying can get you fined or banned from the Schengen area. If you need more time, apply for a national visa (D-visa) before you travel.
If you are flying from Ghana to a non-Schengen country and only transiting through Vienna without leaving the international transit area, you do not need a visa. But if you need to enter Austria (e.g., to switch airports or stay overnight), you need a Schengen visa.
Bring your passport, completed application form, two recent passport-sized photos, flight itinerary, hotel booking, travel insurance, bank statements from the last 3–6 months, and any invitation letters. Also bring copies of everything — the embassy may keep them.
Yes, if you have a valid Schengen visa issued by another member state, you can enter Austria as long as your visa is still valid and you meet the entry conditions (e.g., you do not exceed the 90/180-day rule). But your first point of entry should ideally be the country that issued the visa.
