Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Apply for a visitor visa
Ghanaian passport holders need a visitor visa before flying to Canada. Apply online through the IRCC portal — processing takes 2–4 weeks for most applications. You will need to submit biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at a Visa Application Centre in Accra.Apply for visitor visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your visit to Canada. Canada does not require 6 months of remaining validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may still enforce this — check with your carrier before booking.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Canada
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight itinerary showing you leave Canada before your visa expires.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host in Canada. Immigration may ask where you are staying — having a booking ready avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or a credit card statement showing enough funds for your stay. Officers at Canadian airports sometimes ask for proof you can cover accommodation, food, and transport without working.Recommended
Visa Required — No eTA Option
Ghanaian passport holders cannot use the eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) system. You must apply for a full visitor visa (TRV) before traveling. The eTA is only available to citizens of visa-exempt countries.
Biometrics Appointment in Accra
After submitting your online application, you'll need to visit the Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Accra to give fingerprints and a photo. The VAC is located at 2nd Floor, Trust Towers, F792+4P, Accra. Book your appointment online — walk-ins are not accepted. The biometrics fee is CAD $85 (about GHS 800).
Multiple-Entry Visa Recommended
If you plan to visit Canada more than once in the next 10 years, apply for a multiple-entry visa (CAD $500). It allows you to enter and exit Canada multiple times without reapplying. Single-entry visas (CAD $100) are cheaper but only valid for one trip.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare Your Documents
Gather your passport (valid 6+ months beyond entry), bank statements (last 3–6 months), employment letter or proof of ties to Ghana, travel itinerary, hotel bookings, and any invitation letters. Scan everything as PDFs or JPEGs (max 4 MB per file).
2
Complete the Online Application
Go to the IRCC website (Canada.ca) and create an account. Fill out the application form (IMM 5257), upload your documents, and pay the visa fee (CAD $100 for a single entry, CAD $500 for multiple entries). You'll also pay the biometrics fee (CAD $85) at this stage.
3
Submit Biometrics
After submitting your application, you'll receive a Biometrics Instruction Letter (BIL) via email within 1–2 business days. Book an appointment at the Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Accra (located at 2nd Floor, Trust Towers, F792+4P, Accra). Bring your BIL, passport, and the appointment confirmation. The process takes about 15–20 minutes.
4
Wait for Processing
Standard processing time for visitor visas from Ghana is 4–8 weeks. You can check your application status online through your IRCC account. During this time, the visa officer may request additional documents (e.g., a police clearance certificate or medical exam). Respond promptly to avoid delays.
5
Receive Your Passport and Visa
If approved, your passport will be stamped with a visitor visa (TRV) valid for up to 10 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. You'll receive a passport request letter — submit your passport to the VAC in Accra for visa stamping. Processing takes about 1–2 weeks.
6
Prepare for Arrival in Canada
Before you fly, download your eTA (if you have one) or keep your visa document handy. At the Canadian border, you'll go through primary inspection — have your passport, visa, return ticket, and accommodation details ready. The officer may ask about your purpose of visit, funds, and ties to Ghana. Answer honestly and calmly.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing time for a visitor visa (TRV) from Ghana is 4–8 weeks. However, it can take longer if additional documents are requested or if there are high application volumes. Check current processing times on the IRCC website before applying.
The visa application fee is CAD $100 (about GHS 950) for a single-entry visa or CAD $500 (about GHS 4,750) for a multiple-entry visa. Biometrics cost an additional CAD $85 (about GHS 800). Fees are non-refundable, even if your application is refused.
Not usually. Most applications are processed without an interview. However, the visa officer may request an interview if they need more information about your travel plans, ties to Ghana, or financial situation. If required, the interview will be at the Canadian High Commission in Accra.
Yes, you can apply for an extension of your visitor status from inside Canada. You must apply before your current visa expires. The extension fee is CAD $100, and processing takes about 2–3 months. Overstaying without authorization can lead to a ban from re-entering Canada.
Common refusal reasons include: insufficient ties to Ghana (e.g., lack of employment, family, or property), inadequate proof of funds, unclear travel itinerary, previous immigration violations, or a criminal record. To improve your chances, provide strong evidence of your intention to return to Ghana.
It depends on the nature and severity of the offense. Minor offenses (e.g., a DUI) may still allow entry if you apply for criminal rehabilitation. Serious crimes (e.g., assault, drug trafficking) may make you inadmissible. You should consult an immigration lawyer or the IRCC website for guidance.
Yes, Ghanaian passport holders need a visa even for transit through a Canadian airport. There is no transit visa exemption for Ghana. You must apply for a visitor visa (TRV) or, if you meet specific conditions, a Transit Visa (IMM 5257). Plan ahead — transit visa processing takes the same time as a regular visitor visa.
