Ghanaian passport holders must obtain a visa before traveling to the United States for any purpose, including tourism, business, or transit. As of 2026, there is no visa waiver or visa-on-arrival option for Ghanaian citizens. Apply for a B-1/B-2 visitor visa at the U.S. Embassy in Accra well ahead of your planned travel.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
US visa application
B-1/B-2 visitor visa
Apply for a nonimmigrant visa at the US embassy or consulate in Ghana. Complete the DS-160 form online, pay the $185 USD fee, and schedule an in-person interview. Approval is not guaranteed — bring proof of ties to Ghana (job letter, property deeds, family) to the interview.Apply for US visaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your Ghanaian passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from the US. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
US immigration officers routinely ask for proof you plan to leave. Have a printed or digital return ticket to Ghana or onward travel to another country. Airlines also verify this before issuing a boarding pass.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host letter
Bring a hotel confirmation for your entire stay, or a signed letter from your US host with their address and contact info. Customs officers may ask where you are staying on arrival.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Carry recent bank statements showing at least $200 USD per day of your stay, or a credit card with sufficient limit. Immigration officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Visa required for all purposes
Ghanaian passport holders cannot enter the U.S. without a visa — even for a short layover. There is no visa-on-arrival or visa waiver option. Plan ahead: the application process takes weeks to months.
Overstaying is serious
If you stay past the date on your visa, you risk a ban from re-entering the U.S. for 3 or 10 years, depending on how long you overstay. There are no extensions for tourist visas. Leave before your visa expires.
Interview is key
The visa interview at the U.S. Embassy in Accra is the most important step. Be honest, concise, and prepared. Bring clear evidence of ties to Ghana — job, family, property. The officer decides on the spot.

What happens at the border

1
Complete DS-160 online
Go to ceac.state.gov and fill out the DS-160 form. Have your passport, travel dates, and U.S. address ready. Save the confirmation barcode page — you'll need it for the interview and fee payment.
2
Pay the visa fee
Pay the non-refundable MRV fee ($185 USD) at an Ecobank branch in Ghana or via the designated online portal. Keep the receipt — it's required to schedule your interview.
3
Schedule interview
Log into the U.S. visa appointment system (ais.usvisa-info.com) and book a slot at the U.S. Embassy in Accra. Wait times vary — check current estimates. You'll need your DS-160 barcode and payment receipt.
4
Attend the interview
Arrive at the embassy on time with your passport, DS-160 confirmation, photo, fee receipt, and supporting documents. The officer will ask about your trip, job, and ties to Ghana. Answer honestly and briefly.
5
Wait for processing
If approved, your passport will be stamped and returned via courier (usually DHL) within a few days to a week. If refused, you'll get a written reason — you can reapply later.
6
Travel to the U.S.
Once you have the visa, book your flight. At the U.S. port of entry (airport), a CBP officer will ask about your visit. Have your return ticket, accommodation address, and proof of funds ready. They may also check your electronic devices.

Frequently asked questions

The entire process — from DS-160 submission to passport return — typically takes 4 to 12 weeks. Interview wait times at the Accra embassy fluctuate; check current estimates on the U.S. visa appointment website. After approval, passport delivery via DHL takes 3–5 business days.
Yes, but it makes approval harder. You must disclose all arrests, convictions, or charges on the DS-160. Bring court documents showing the outcome (e.g., dismissal, completion of sentence). Some crimes (especially drug offences, fraud, or violent crimes) can lead to a permanent ban. Consult an immigration lawyer before applying.
You'll receive a refusal letter under Section 214(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (most common reason: insufficient ties to Ghana). There's no appeal, but you can reapply later with stronger evidence. There's no waiting period — but applying too soon without changes usually results in another refusal.
Yes. Even if you're only changing planes in the U.S. (e.g., Accra to New York to London), you must have a valid U.S. visa or be eligible for the Visa Waiver Program (Ghana is not part of it). There is no transit without a visa exception for Ghanaian passport holders.
There's no fixed amount, but you should show enough to cover your trip expenses (flights, accommodation, food, transport) without working in the U.S. A common benchmark is $100–$200 per day of stay. Bank statements from the last 3–6 months are standard. If someone else is funding your trip, bring their bank statements and a sponsorship letter.
No. The visa stamp in your passport has an expiration date — you must leave before it expires. Extensions are not available for B-1/B-2 visitors. Overstaying even a day can get you banned from re-entering for years. If you have an emergency, contact U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) before your visa expires.
Have your passport with the visa, your return flight ticket (printed or on your phone), the address of where you're staying, and proof of sufficient funds (cash, credit card, or bank statement). The CBP officer may also ask about your job and purpose of visit. Keep your phone unlocked — they can request to see it.
