Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your Greek passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Mozambique. No minimum validity beyond departure is required, but airlines may enforce 6 months — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration at Maputo Airport routinely asks for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or digital booking ready. Airlines also check this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Immigration officers may ask for it, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked stay.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show sufficient cash or card
Have at least $500 USD equivalent in cash or a credit card statement. Officers at Maputo Airport occasionally ask for proof of funds, especially for longer stays.Recommended
Cash only at visa counter
The visa on arrival fee must be paid in cash — no credit or debit cards. Bring USD in small denominations ($20s and $10s) or Mozambican metical. ATMs are available after immigration but not at the visa counter.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Mozambique, not from your departure date. If it expires sooner, renew before you travel.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration
At Maputo International Airport (MPM) or other entry points, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. There's usually a separate counter before passport control.
2
Present documents and pay
Hand over your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation. Pay the visa fee in cash (USD preferred). The officer will issue a visa sticker valid for up to 30 days.
3
Proceed to passport control
After getting the visa, go to the regular passport control queue. They'll stamp you in. Keep the visa slip with your passport — you'll need it when leaving.

Frequently asked questions

The visa on arrival is typically valid for 30 days. You can apply for an extension at the immigration office in Maputo or your province, but it's not guaranteed.
Yes, but it's not automatic. You'll need to visit the Serviço Nacional de Migração in Maputo (or provincial offices) before your visa expires. The extension fee is around 1,000–2,000 MZN (about $15–$30 USD). Processing takes a few days.
Visa on arrival is available at most major land border crossings, including Ressano Garcia (from South Africa) and Zobue (from Malawi). The process is the same — cash payment, passport validity check, and return ticket. Some smaller posts may not offer it, so check ahead.
If you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (or transiting through one), you'll need the vaccine certificate. Otherwise, it's not required for direct travel from Greece. Check the latest WHO list before you go.
Technically no — immigration can ask for proof of onward travel. If you don't have one, you might be refused entry or asked to buy a ticket on the spot. Best to have a refundable onward booking.
As of 2025, the fee is $50 USD for a single-entry visa. It's payable in cash (USD or metical). Keep small bills — change may not be available.
Yes, at Maputo International Airport (MPM), Beira Airport (BEW), and Nampula Airport (APL). For smaller airports, check with the airline or embassy beforehand.
