Greek passport holders can enter Tajikistan without a visa for stays up to 30 days. This policy has been in effect since 2022 and covers tourism, business, and transit visits. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Tajikistan
Your passport must have at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Tajikistan strictly enforces the 6-month validity rule — airlines check this at check-in. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before you travel.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Tajikistan
Immigration officers at Dushanbe International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a digital version on your phone. Overland exits are also checked, so a bus or train ticket works too.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked hotel. A printed hotel confirmation or a letter from a host (with their contact details) covers you. If you're staying with friends, have their address and phone number ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Officers can ask for proof of sufficient funds — roughly $50 per day of your stay. A bank statement, credit card, or cash in USD works. Most travellers never get asked, but having $500–$1,000 in cash or a card statement avoids problems.Recommended
Registration required after 10 days
If you plan to stay more than 10 days, you must register with the local OVIR office. Your hotel can usually handle this. If you're staying privately, you need to do it yourself. Unregistered stays can lead to fines at departure.
Gorno-Badakhshan permit
If you're heading to the Pamir Highway or any part of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, you need a special permit. You can get it at the OVIR office in Dushanbe or Khorog. Costs about 20 TJS (€2) and takes a day. Your tour operator can also arrange it.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Dushanbe International Airport (or land border)
Most Greek travellers fly into Dushanbe International Airport (DYU). At immigration, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp you in — no visa needed. The process usually takes 5–10 minutes.
2
Fill out the arrival card (if required)
Some border crossings still use paper arrival/departure cards. You'll get one on the plane or at the counter. Fill in your details (name, passport number, flight number, address in Tajikistan). Keep the departure portion safe — you'll need it when you leave.
3
Show your accommodation and onward ticket
The immigration officer may ask for proof of where you're staying and your exit ticket. Have your hotel booking confirmation and return flight screenshot ready on your phone. If you don't have a fixed plan, a refundable booking works.
4
Collect your luggage and exit customs
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. Customs is usually green channel (nothing to declare) unless you're carrying large sums of cash or restricted items. Walk straight through.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. If you need to stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for a visa in advance at a Tajik embassy or consulate before you travel. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban.
You need a visa. Apply at the nearest Tajik embassy or consulate before your trip. The most common option is a single-entry tourist visa valid for up to 90 days. Processing takes about 5–10 working days. Costs vary by embassy but typically around €30–€50.
If you stay more than 10 days in Tajikistan, you must register with the Ministry of Internal Affairs (OVIR) within 10 days of arrival. Your hotel can usually do this for you. If you're staying with friends or in a private apartment, you need to do it yourself at the local OVIR office. Failure to register can result in a fine when you leave.
Yes, the visa-free policy applies at all land borders. Common crossings include the Panjakent border from Uzbekistan and the Kyzyl-Art pass from Kyrgyzstan. The same 30-day limit applies. Make sure your passport has enough blank pages for stamps from both countries.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll likely be fined around 100–300 TJS (about €10–€30) per day of overstay, and you may be banned from re-entering Tajikistan for a period. Always leave on time or get a visa extension before your 30 days are up.
No mandatory vaccinations for entry. However, the CDC and WHO recommend routine vaccines (MMR, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, polio) plus hepatitis A and typhoid. If you're hiking in remote areas, consider rabies vaccination. Check with your doctor 4–6 weeks before travel.
Tajikistan is generally safe for tourists, especially in Dushanbe and the popular Pamir Highway region. Petty crime like pickpocketing can happen in crowded markets. Avoid the border with Afghanistan and the Gorno-Badakhshan region without a permit. Register with the Greek embassy in Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan) for emergencies.
