Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Hong Kong passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Austria. Schengen rules don't require 6 months beyond departure, but airlines sometimes enforce it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Vienna and other Schengen entry points routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave within 90 days.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from your host with their address and contact info. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Austrian border officers can ask to see you have enough money for your stay — roughly €100 per day. A recent bank statement or credit card with a decent limit covers this.Recommended
Schengen area rules apply
Your 90-day visa-free stay is for the entire Schengen area, not just Austria. If you've already spent 30 days in France, you only have 60 days left for Austria and other Schengen countries combined.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you enter Austria, not your departure date. If your passport expires in 5 months, you'll be denied entry.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Austrian airport
After landing at Vienna International Airport (VIE) or any other Austrian airport, follow signs to 'Passport Control' or 'Border Control'. There are separate queues for EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and for all other passports. Join the 'All Passports' queue.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport (open to the photo page) and any supporting documents if asked. The officer will check your passport validity, scan it, and may ask about your travel plans, accommodation, and return ticket. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Get your entry stamp
If everything is in order, the officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the number of days allowed. Check the stamp before leaving the counter. If you see a handwritten date or number, make sure it matches your intended stay.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked luggage), then go through customs (green channel for most travellers). You're now in the Schengen area.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, and short-term visits only. Remote work for a foreign employer is technically not allowed. If you plan to work remotely, consider a digital nomad visa (Austria offers one for up to 6 months, but you must apply in advance).
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, banned from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 3 years, or both. The fine varies but can be several hundred euros. Always leave before your 90 days are up.
If you stay longer than 3 days in Austria, you must register at the local 'Meldeamt' (registration office) within 3 days of arrival. Hotels usually do this for you. If staying with friends or family, you need to do it yourself. Bring your passport and the host's address.
Yes. Austria is part of the Schengen area. You can fly into Germany, France, Italy, etc., and then travel to Austria without additional border checks. Your 90-day clock starts the moment you enter any Schengen country.
You need a visa or residence permit. Apply at the Austrian embassy in Hong Kong before you travel. Options include student visas, work visas, or family reunion visas. Processing takes 2–3 months, so plan ahead.
No. Hong Kong passport holders do not need a transit visa for Austria. You can stay in the international transit area without a visa. If you need to leave the airport, you'll need a Schengen visa (unless you're visa-free).
No. E-gates are for EU/EEA/Swiss citizens only. Hong Kong passport holders must use the manned counters.
