Hong Kong passport holders can visit the Czech Republic visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This covers tourism, business meetings, or family visits. As of 2026, entry is straightforward, but you must meet standard Schengen requirements.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Hong Kong passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in the Czech Republic. Schengen rules do not require 6 months beyond departure, but some airlines may still enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Prague Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines often check this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel reservation or a letter from your host ready. Officers at border control occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry at least 1,100 CZK per day (about €45) in cash or a credit card with a recent statement. Border police can ask for proof of sufficient funds for your stay.Recommended
Schengen 90/180 day rule
Your 90-day visa-free stay applies to the entire Schengen area, not just the Czech Republic. Days spent in France, Germany, Italy, etc. all count toward your 90-day limit. Track your days carefully to avoid overstaying.
Entry may be refused even without a visa
Visa-free access does not guarantee entry. Border officers can refuse entry if they suspect you don't meet the conditions (e.g., insufficient funds, no return ticket, unclear purpose of visit). Always carry supporting documents.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Print or save digital copies of your passport, return ticket, accommodation booking, and insurance. Keep them in a separate folder on your phone for quick access.
2
Arrive at Prague Airport (or other entry point)
At Václav Havel Airport Prague, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Passport Control' for non-EU citizens. Queues can be 15-45 minutes during peak hours.
3
Present your passport to the border officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and your return date. Answer clearly and briefly. They will stamp your passport with entry date.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're now in the Schengen area.

Frequently asked questions

No. The Schengen rules require your passport to be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date, but the Czech Republic (like most Schengen countries) enforces a stricter 6-month validity from your entry date. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before you travel.
Yes. For stays over 90 days (work, study, long-term family visit), you need a national long-stay visa or residence permit. Apply at the Czech Embassy in Hong Kong well in advance — processing can take 2-3 months.
No. The 90-day visa-free period is not extendable for tourism. You must leave the Schengen area before day 90. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, or a ban from re-entering Schengen.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may be fined (typically €100-300), detained, and banned from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 5 years. Always track your days carefully.
If you're staying in a hotel, the hotel registers you automatically. If you're staying with friends or family, your host must register you with the Foreign Police within 3 working days of your arrival. Ask your host to handle this.
No. You need at least one blank page for the entry stamp. If your passport is full, renew it before you travel.
Not for visa-free entry, but it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in the Czech Republic can be high — a simple hospital visit can cost €200-500. A basic travel insurance policy covers this and is cheap.
