Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date from the Schengen area
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your planned exit from the Schengen zone. Hungary follows Schengen rules — the 90/180-day limit applies across all 29 Schengen countries, not just Hungary. Airlines at Hong Kong International Airport will check this before boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of exit from the Schengen area
Immigration at Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport routinely asks for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. A flight to London or Dubai works — it doesn't have to be back to Hong Kong. Budget airlines check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a signed invitation letter from your host in Hungary ready. Border officers at Budapest sometimes ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A printout or a screenshot on your phone works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient means for your stay
Carry evidence of enough funds — roughly €100 per day of your stay is a safe benchmark. A recent bank statement or a credit card with a decent limit usually satisfies the officer. Hungary rarely enforces this strictly for Hong Kong passport holders, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
90-day rule applies to the whole Schengen Area
Your 90-day visa-free stay is for all 29 Schengen countries combined, not just Hungary. If you've already spent 30 days in France, you only have 60 days left for Hungary and the rest of Schengen. Track your days with the Schengen calculator app.
Border officers can still refuse entry
Even though no visa is required, border officers have the right to refuse entry if they suspect you'll overstay, work illegally, or can't support yourself. Always carry proof of onward travel, accommodation, and sufficient funds.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Budapest Airport or land border
At Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, follow the 'Non-EU Passports' signs. Join the queue for passport control. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present your documents to the border officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and your return ticket. Answer clearly and briefly. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim. Then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no goods to declare. You're now in Hungary.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, or family visits only. Remote work for a foreign employer is technically not allowed under this status. If you plan to work remotely, you'd need a digital nomad visa or a work permit.
No. The visa-free period cannot be extended. You must leave the Schengen Area before day 90. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area.
No. If you're connecting through a Hungarian airport to a non-Schengen destination and you stay airside, you don't need a visa. But if you need to enter Hungary (e.g., to switch airports or stay overnight), the visa-free rules apply.
You may be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. Renew your passport before traveling. Some airlines are stricter than others, but it's not worth the risk.
No. For stays under 90 days, there's no registration requirement. Hotels will register you automatically. If you're staying with friends or family, they should notify the local immigration office within 3 days, but this is rarely enforced for short visits.
Yes. There are no border checks between Schengen countries. You can drive or take a train from Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, or Croatia without showing your passport. But keep your passport handy — random checks do happen.
Overstaying is a violation. You could be fined (typically €50–200), deported, and banned from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 5 years. Always track your days carefully.
